Hi guys i want to change my fuel filter on a 2000 e220cdi.the filter housing has 3 pipes coming out of the top,2 are held in with compressed clips and the middle one seems to have a plastic prong clip which you pull out.the top of the housing is round with a serated edge, does this just unscrew anti clockwise fully or just by 90 degrees, would appreciate any advice as i like to do these sort of tasks myself, thanks fellas:)

The serrated edged housing is unscrewed , it is an outer ring and the centre cap with the pipes remains static u will probably need a filter wrench to unscrew this cap ring, the type to use is the large plier type with circular jaws, dont attemt to knock it free it could break unscrew it fully by hand last few threads normally, and lift away from the filter housing remember to fill the filter up with clean diesel, heating oil or parrafin will suffice as the car will be abugger to start otherwise and from memory the filter can be fitted either way up but check the old one before u lift it out just in case and make sure the top rubber seal is properly seated before screwing on the locking ring and dont be tempted to remove any of the pipes they will leak for sure

you push the prong clip in to release...this spreads the jaws of the holder.

the filter element can only fit one way up ...this will be obvious when you look at it

I have replaced three of these pipes due to ham fisted mechanics attempting to remove these pipes . the plastic clips become hard and brittle and break very easily ..they then push the pipe back into place and say nothing about the one clip that has broken off and as u know the clip is on a ring sytem which renders the remaing clip useless.. and if u need a new pipe ur local dealer always has them in stock..I wonder why

Looked to change my fuel filter today.
Mine has 4 pipes. 2 had jubilee clips and the others, one has the plastic c clip the other a metal band.
The jubilee clips came off fine but the MB clip would not budge.
In earlier posts it was said that the filter bowl had a screw ring top. Mine looks like the whole top comes off but I couldn't get it to unscrew.
I have the type of filter wrench with the three legs which works fine on the oil filter and my 4x4 but I thought I was going to break the top so gave up.

Anybody got any experience of this type of filter cup?
