...a fuel filter near the fuel tank on the Mercedes 1994 250D.  I am getting fuel starvation problems on my Mercedes .I have changed the diesel filter and the pre-filter under the bonnet but is there another one at the back of the car underneath by the fuel tank. ( Must wait until Monday to use a ramp )

Until recently i had a 92 250D, as far as i'm aware the filters you have changed are the only ones. Have you made sure you have ont got water in the fuel?

Your profile says you in the south east, whereabouts?

Hey Dave, I flushed the tank lastv year.Changed the filters recently so many times  I lost count. I think it started with water in the diesel, but it has been going on now for about two years on and off. I am hoping to find the `secret` filter tomorrow when I get her on a ramp. Essex, by the way. ( I don`t broadcast it much ; Essex Man wiv Merc cunjures up all the right images. )

The story continues.......It still hasn`t been on a ramp. But I was assured by a Mercedes man that this model doesn`t have a filter on the back end. I went to a Diesl expert and I think he has gone diectly to the problem. He looked at the engine and his hand went straight to the lift pump. He reckons from the story I gave himthat there in lies the prob.( Mercedes hinted new injector pump and injectors but they were not sure. Anyway I can`t get the car in until 22.4.02 , so I will let you know how I get on. ( Viva ! La Costa Essex!!)

As you are fairly close to Gods country, you could try Rochester City Diesels (01634813305), i forget the guys name, but he's really helpful, (bit of an Arfur Daley) but generally a good old boy, he might also be able to get it sorted sooner.

what were the symptoms of which led to your suspicion of starvation/water.
I have a 300D which from time to time on a long usually at cruising speed  'falters' particularly when on cruise.  Kicking it off cruise seems to do the trick, never been quite sure whether its a fuel issue but thats what it feels like.  Car has never stopped and it comes and goes so I live with it but would like to get rid of it if poss.

Re Keith>>The EDC warning light comes on ,total loss of power.but it doesn`t cut out ,just goes to tick-over. I knock it in to neutral touch the throttle ,it fires up .Then stick it back into Drive. If I am accelerating or slowing down ,no problem. If I maintain a constant speed then it gives probs. It will pull away in the mornings no trouble at all. Thats why I think it is fuel flow and not the expensive side of the businness. The reason I can`t get it in for a couple of weeks is because I need to use it. I `ve had this problem on and off since December 2000. Lancasters are only interested in £80 per hour and huge replacement parts. The`ve had the best out of me.

Got the car in this morning. The Diesel engineers have warned me against using that `Forte`additive. I used to fill the new diesel filter up with it befor starting her up. (It displaces the carbon build-up.) It can unseat the injectors causing air to pass back into the pump and going into stalling mode. Keeping my fingers crossed that it won`t be too dear. Also throttle cable very slack; no kick-down ect. I will keep you posted.

Update. Rubber O rings have arrived at Lancasters at 12.00hrs. Have arranged for them to be sent to Lexden Diesels. I need the car until Monday morning ,so everything is on the back burner. It will be funny if it turns out that the car has been running like a dog for the last 18 months because the elastic band has worn out. `Drive by wire`??

Glad to hear that you are having some luck at last, lets hope it keeps up, and that you have many miles of trouble free motoring, which is what we expect from "The Marque!"
