Good evening all,
I took my 2011 W221 in to MB for a B service on Friday (had a nice C class as loan car). So far so good . . .
Went to pick the car up Friday evening and was told "Sorry, sir, the EML is on now" !
Then was told I should pay the bill and bring the car back next week for investigation (they think it may have something to do with the NOx sensors). o_O

I told them firmly that I wouldn't take my car back until it was working as it was on arrival.

After some discussion, it turns out that they had applied the Diesel Recall (KDM 5496120) which I had previously told them not to install.

So, I'm keeping the "loan" car until next week, when they'll get it back on Star and find out what's going on.
My feeling is that the old sensors are incompatible with the Update, or that the update installation wasn't correctly installed.

Anyone have ideas on this, or experience ?

Help/opinions gratefully received.

I think ur spot on. If u can show you told em NOT to update the issue is clearly down to them. Stand ur ground, take no contribution crxp just rtn the car without eml on. And when they do drive it around their car park for an hr before heading home. The whole nox, adblue is just crxp.

Very unfortunate in view of the fact that you had told them not to install the NOx update as above if my car has to go into a MB dealership I’ll get them to sign an agreement that if the diesel emissions software update is installed I won’t be responsible within a year for any failure of the emissions system. I’m pretty sure that you’ll get the updated NOx sensors fitted FOC under the circumstances

Which is why my car will never the inside of a MB dealership
Same as.. If one signs worksheet as no update and they do. They are, I believe in breach of contract? No?
They could have refused the job.

2014 639 Viano- 651, 5sp Auto. 2009 S211- 646, 5sp Auto.

They created the issue,
then expected you to drive it away in an unroadworthy condition.

The problem is that for you to learn what the diagnosed problem is you are dependant on their honesty. They may be economical with the truth. So sight of their diagnostic result would be good.
They may claim the failure is a coincidence.

It may be worth you building a case with examples of those that had the NOX issue following the update. That being why you told them not to.

Just a thought.

The original NOX sensors apparently don't work with the emissions update.
So their replacement becomes a must.

Mercedes call us in for the update,
they update, then say there is a problem with the engine that will cost oodles for resolution.

They knew beforehand that this was the going to be the case.
But they don't warn that the free update will cost the owner for new sensors.
There is no legal requirement for the update in the UK, so it is merely their preference to update.

That is fraud surely.

it won't programme the car with the current software nor will they supply the correct parts (unless we can get the numbers) until this has happened

Perform a retrofit of special equipment code ‘30o’ via Vdoc – requiring dealer tooling and official logins

to me Recall is not optional - this would be the equiv of a BMW Stop Sale order - where the dealership MUST correct the fault before allowing it to leave their care - you can't ask not to have it, if the car goes in to a dealership for ANYTHING its getting it by law

Recall KDM 5496120 - solely affects vehicles of Euro 6b standard, Merc production of this was discontinued at the latest end May 2018

As previously announced, pursuant to an administrative order by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) Daimler will conduct a mandatory recall for Mercedes-Benz vehicles with diesel engines in Europe. - whilst the UK is not in the EU we are in many ways still having to follow European law and Tode is in Frogland

Yes, Wighty, French dealer.
Over here Indies don't seem to exist . . .

To be honest, I've always been satisfied with the service. Up until now.

I'm trying to find out if there's a new version of the NOx sensor available since the update began - which would suggest that the original sensors are incompatible with the updated software.

Hi Botus,
according to Mercedes, the KDM 5496120 is a "Voluntary service measure, i.e. a measure that was not ordered by the KBA"
Here is the list of affected models.
It indicates that the measure is for my model built between 07/2013 et 01/2017. Since mine is from 10/2011, surely that means that the the dealer shouldn't have carried it out ?

the pdf screenshot above from the link in the post I provided, is listing Merc vehicles where the mandatory Euro 6b recall MUST be put on your car by Mercedes if you like it or not

the one Tode got, and he later correctly identifies is a lesser notification KDM 5496120 as "Voluntary service measure" - is for older vehicles were it can be made less wrong by updating its engine management software - I'm not sure if cars this early should get Mk3 sensors or not - I suspect those later NOx sensors are for the ones in the pdf document - the dealership will EASILY know if it says they should "Perform a retrofit of special equipment code ‘30o’ via Vdoc" and if after doing so, it says it should take a later sensor type and get 3 more software updates

it doesn't feel like a coincidence if they keep going in OK and come out wrong (far too many are getting this exact scenario) - it looks rather like Merc are claiming back the costs of ALL the work to fix their illegality (over more than 10 years) from owners of cars nowadays outside the dealer servicing network, by knowingly applying software that suddenly extorts £900 quid from said customers

@ajlsl600 more sense in later posts....

don't forget build date gives the specifics of what spec it was made too - date of first registration (should) get the emission standards it had to adhere too (hence we often see good deals on pre-registered "brand new" cars)

That intrigues me as well: on both the CoC and my Carte Grise (equivalent of your V5C), my car is "Euro6", whereas the Update is for "6b" . . . ?
