i posted a thread a little while ago concerning leaking diesel, so to cut a long story short a few months ago had a constant smell of diesel in the car, after several visits to my local garage a reconditioned fuel pump and connecting pipes still had diesel smell when car driven hard. garage then said i had a leaking gearbox and recommended a merc specialist. new garage fixed leaking gearbox have driven car for about a week but not driven hard at all. drove the car last night fairly hard and guess what a stronge diesel smell inside the car. took car to merc specialist this morning who could not find any obvious leaks but have booked it in with them for friday. so basically i am at a loss to know what and where this diesel smell is coming from. and just to clarify before people start saying i am going mad other people in the car could also smell this diesel as well. help !!!

What car do you have, w mckeown?
I had a similar problem with my W203 C220. My wife had noticed it was "chugging" a bit, too.
Local dealer diagnosed two nadgered injectors and a leaking high-pressure pump.
It's going like a dream now and no diesel smell, but I hope your remedy is a bit cheaper than mine.

could be your cat blocked, forcing gases out in engine bay area, thus entering through into cabin,
