Good afternoon. I recently bought a 1997 w202 250 diesel. The owner say it was diesel starved and they couldnt get it running again. It is a automatic. Any advice on how to bleed the system please.

Try cycling the ign a few times , waiting 20 seconds between each cycle, then try starting it.

Wonder if the previous owner has been running it on veg oil?

The 250 isn’t “cdi” but the pumps can still suffer - I’d get the fuel filter, pump and injectors checked

hmmmm seems a bit of a red herring to me. I have never bled a merc thats had air in the fuel system. Ignition on to pos 2 (dont start), then off, then repeat (to purge air). Then a start.

Mercs dont like poor diesel filters. Check, replace with genuine.
Seems the fuel pump may have ran dry and thats what the PO is alluding too - possible?

they need fuel and compression. you need to dig deeper and determine why no fuel is getting to the injectors. fuel filter, lines, leaks, pump etc

Saddle tanks / bet the tanks less than half full .. fill it up and don’t let it go below half a tank full and you will not have a problem.
Do a search on this forum for w202 saddle tank.

The way I've always bled mechanical diesel injection systems is to 'crack' the fuel union nut on top of the injector and crank till diesel flows from it then re-tighten.
