In part, the reason that you find many diesels with high mileage is because they are bought by people who intend doing high mileage. ;)

Correct.

Modern petrol engines can go on forever too. The last BMW I had (in 1999), had 108,000 when I traded it in. The engine was sweet.

And the low mileage petrols just get polished ;):D

I've run both of my last two cars to just under 170,000 miles and neither was showing signs of age as far as the engine was concerned. One did the mileage in 3 years the other over a period of 8 years.

Both were large displacement and so unflustered at motorway speeds.

I did try out an E320 CDI, but just couldn't get to grips with the power delivery (an all or nothing afair above and below 1800rpm), especially on roundabouts.
