diff dispair

The dry rubbing noise that i thought was on my back wheel has now started
making whining noises,ive been advised its the diff £875+vat @merc newcastle .Its got my head done in,any advice on my next move greatly appreciated.

Diff failures are not that common so a used replacement may be a viable alternative. The 2 people I would approach as MercMan in Southampton and Dronsfields (Near Manchester I believe) though both do mail order. A recon of your existing diff may also be an option as Newso don't jump at the first option.
Also, when you say MB Newcastle - you don't mean you're at the dealer do you. Find an indie and halve your labour costs.
I'd expect to have the whole thing sorted for £300 - but don't hold me to that!

do worry ,loads of used diffs for sale out there,just make sure you get the same ratio,its stamped on the machined face ,top ,where the back plate bolts on ,labour 2 to 3 hrs on a ramp ,plus cost of diff.
