HI ,
I've just had an A service done on my 2000 W210 320CDI Estate at a main dealer. They found a number of faults with very "nice" costings to rectify them.

Diff side seal replacement £450+vat
Gearbox plug seal replacement £95+vat
Front discs+pads £289+vat

I've always worked on my previous cars and was thinking of doing these my self. How difficult are they to do?

The Diff seals have gone as the breather will be blocked. Make sure that is replaced.
Change the gearbox oil.
Parrot of Doom has changed the gearbox oil and has put an excellent guide on the forum. I think he is also going to do the Diff overhaul, although I don't think he has done it yet.
I've had all these done on mine in July 04 at 43K miles. Cost for 'B' service New Front Discs/Pads, Brake Fluid replacement, fuel filters, Diff oil seals and breather - £1,093.28 inc vat.

Get that gearbox seal changed pronto......these boxes have a nasty habit of weeping auto box oil which travels up the electrical wiring into the Gearbox ECU and then promtly Bu**ers it up......not cheap once this happens.

The leaking diff seals seems to be a Merc trait as well.....both C280's that I have had, have had leaking diff seals.

Check out Euro Car parts for the discs and pads. I did mine, it was an easy 1.5 hour job to do both. The discs cost £36/pair and the pads about £20/pair. I also have a leak diff seal for the prop shaft, it has about 1 drip/week so I will live with the problem rather than spending about £300 getting it fixed.

Thanks for the advise.

I got a Merc specialist to do the lot except the Diff seal which he said wasn't needed for £620.

Haven't done the diff yet, but the brakes have got to be a DIY job tbh. Not difficult at all, just a bit messy.

I've got a weeping diff seal on the 500E. This was pointed out by an Indie some time ago who said that it was a common occurance and it was not worth doing anything about unless the leak was serious. Just monitor it and top up as required. It has lasted so for 3 years but I have the relevant seal and now have the detailed fitting instructions - so I might get round to it. The oil on the diff always looks worse than the amount used would suggest.

Diff Seal replacement instructions.

Clive - If it's the diff seal for the prop shaft, can you post the instructions that you have. I am sure it's a common procedure for most MB diffs.

Hi Tamsoft, Its the n/s output shaft seal, which doesn't look too difficult off the parts schedule or the specific fitting instructions on WIS. Things are complicated on the 500E as it has an lsd and traction control and on mine is the interim model with half of the E500 bits. Thanks for the thought though
