Hi all,
I own a 2003 c220 CDI mercedes.Unfortunately, being a classic version it doesnt have airconditioning ,only climate control. On climate control,if i put 18 degrees on a hot summer day ,it only blows hot air through the fan ventillators causing driver sweat even more.Do u think its a fault?.Whats's the difference between an aircon and climate control?
Help would be much appreciated

Welcome to the Forum.

In answer to your questions:

1) The aircon system needs pressure-checking first, for leaks. If a leak is found, the source of the leak needs to be identified and then rectified before 2) below
2) A re-gas of the system may be required if all OK in 1) above.
3) Climate control maintains a set temperature (set by user) and may blow warm on cold days, and cold on warm/sunny days. It is fully automatic.
4) Aircon blows cold ALL the time, and the cabin temperature must be balanced out manually by the heater control.

Hope this helps.

Climate is more advanced than just AirCon as per Jez.ML270 above ^

If you have Climate then you do have AC as well so I suspect that your compressor isn't running. I would find a local AC specialist and have them test the system out.

Climate control is so much more comfortable than air con the just blows cold air as said above.

Are you sure that you have not got the EC light on,, that means AC off

Sounds to me like they only have Heatronic! Which means it will only blow in air from outside at whatever temp it is!

Is Climatronic the climate control, or the A/C option? I forgot! Or is the Luxury climate control the climate control version?

Does anyone know of a way to check if the aircon is working or not when the air temp is lower outside?

It seems to me like we do not get the old trouble of the seals going as the compressor runs all of the time these days,
With the earlier systems, if you did not run them once a month the seals would leak and you had to get the car re charged

Air con does not work below a certain temp.
Not sure exactly, maybe 3 or 5 degrees or so?

And another thing. Someone in a garage once told me that if you turn the aircon off for extended periods then it will need re gassing/servicing more often. ie it needs to be operated in order to keep it going. Any truth in this? I am mindful of the increase in fuel consumption during the winter in order to avoid the regassing costs and i'm not sure which is cheaper!

Thanks Russ. My reason for asking is that I have just bought my W202 and it has been pretty cold all the time so far so I haven't had the chance to check the aircon. I guess I will wait for summer but, as my previous post, I don't want to run the aircon if it's in need of a service anyway as I'm trying to be as economical as possible. If I could guarantee that it was working and I was convinced that operating it is better than not then I would keep it on! Hmmm decisions, decisions!!!

As in post 9 if you have Air con then run it once a month for 10 mins

where are you.

It can't be substantially cold enough for the a/c not to be used on the run to work. or during the day tomorrow! Unless you live in the artic somewhere.

And it will cost more to get it fixed, if you dont run it while trying to save fuel!

The other tip that I put out years ago that no one wanted to know was;
If you turn off your air con 5 mins before the end of a journey this would enable the evaporator to dry out and stop it from rotting as they do.

We have all seen that puddle of water under the car in summer,, it stops that

Is that the condensor?

I took it on board as it happens.

makes me laugh when I hear someone ring the garage saying their car is leaking, when its just water.

Why not keep the air con on all the time, I don't believe it uses as much fuel as people think it does in a modern car. Any time I've switched mine off, my fuel consumption does not seem to change very much, but my windows steam up, so I leave it on all the time.
