Differential pressure sensor

My engine diagnosic light came on. I have been told by the garage its the differential pressure sensor and will cost 450 pounds. I would like to know if anybody could tell me what this sensor does and if it not replacing this sensor will damage the engine. I would also like to know if this a good price for the job as this seeems very expensive.

I take it that the car is a c,class??

The last differential sensor i replaced was about £25, it bolts the of the head next to the gearbox dipstick tube?
