First of all i'd like to say hi, i'm new to this forum, i originally came from the mbcub.co.uk forums and my alias on there is "Rage". (I mainly came here because i miss Malcolm so much!) :)

I've been doing some work on my car as there was banging associated when changing gears, now we've itendtified that it was an (almost) destroyed differential. I copy pasted whats below because i wrote this same post on the other forum but i have had no replies:

Ok now we've removed the differential which happened to be an open diff, quote alot of the teeth were missing and there was metal filings dropping on the floor, and some of the actual gears were very loose... so glad it didnt break while i was driving.

Now lies my next question:

Before i contact dronsfield on monday to negotiate another differential i want to know what will be involved in fitting a limited slip differential or as the parts' technician called it "Anti-lock diff/ ASR"? The technician told me they have exactly the same ratios but that the ASR one had more sensors and needed appropriate wiring, and it was usually done in the factory before the car was to be sold.

Now he showed me the ASR diff and it looks exactly the same, same casing/housing, same design, and its the same ratio! just a few more sockets probably for electronic aids ( i think like 1 ).

My question is, can i directly replace my old open diff, with this limited slip diff? and if i could, how would i get it to fully function like on any other merc similar car? is there alot of work involved?

I would like to know the answer to this before monday, cuz if i can upgrade something like that for not much extra, i'd love to do it. Any help / knowledge shared is much appreciated.

Can't help with the diff, only changed out diffs on earlier, non electronic cars, but you'll find Malcolm on clubmb.darkbb.com

Not really a practical proposition in my opinion as whilst the diff itself can be built incorporating the parts for ASR, there is a minefield of wiring and sensors for the diff operation to interplay with both electronic throttle (non linkage type) and ABS brake system and the warning light in dash ete etc

The ASR applies appropriate rear brake (one side or the other) and /or closes down the throttle plate according to feedback from various sensors telling the computer whether the car is slipping or not, and how it is slipping.

You would need a different computer for the car with the parameters programmed into it.

However Quaiffe do a torque sensing diff and may have one suitable for your car - see their web site.
