Hey Guys...

Driving the W124 today to BMERC to be seen to for new brake pads... And the Barnet area was absolutely frozen solid. There was water on top of the ice too!

I couldn't get the car to pull off properly as I don't believe there is any way of getting the car to lock into a higher gear or a winter mode.

Is there any way of retrofitting Traction Control or any recommendations for getting more traction?

The LSD was working perfectly and locked up when it should have, but still, no traction at all. Getting up hills was terrible.

Stu,, when I lived in Sweden I drove north of Stockholm by 200miles one December day the sun was shining, when it was time to go home the snow had fallen, I started up my 300TE and put it into D and the back end just waggled, no drive at all. I garage came around with 4 spiked tyres and wheels, fitted them and drove home with ease for the whole 55okm drive.

They are hopeless in the snow, a few bags of sand in the back does help.

Fitting any form of traction control does not help that much in snow and would be very expensive to do

It would be a lot easier to buy winter tyres.

Hi Stu, As malcolm says a few bags of sand in the back. My 500se with 150kgm of concrete blocks in the boot and good tyres on the back - nothing stopped it for the 7 years I had it . And we get a lot of snow in the hills here in winter. You are talking about a serious amount of weight to be effective though, not just a few bricks!.

Always ran my HSR with paving slabs in the back during the winter. Was the only way to get any traction.

Snow chains? Do they still sell these here? used to be common years ago - when we had regular "proper" winters, none of these namby pamby ones you get nowadays!!

i aggree with macolm. my e300 td has traction control. waste of time in snow etc. yes it stops the wheels spinning, but (with mine) it also stops the car from moving! the system fitted to the w203 c class seems better though. it allows a degree of slip, unlike the system on my w210 e class! or maybe thats another fault with mine........
