as title really - anyone doing this these days?
Used to be common ....
Only did it on a set of 2piece slk 55 discs that had surface corrosion. Still above min thickness when done. Not worth it on normal discs.
What would be the benefit of skimming the disc's? I would rather replace with new.
At the time I think the discs would have cost nearly £2k. So I think a bit of benifit to the customers pocket.
That was super quick Ian!
Personally I’d be reticent these days, but it was extremely common say 15 years or so ago with the Golf gti brigade
High performance and range discs it would have maybe extended the life for a few more months or maybe more if the car was little used, relatively low cost
Wouldn’t bother on normal discs, but 2 and 3 piece discs are stupidly expensive, so worth doing if you can keep them above min thickness. Sat in log cabin relaxing after winter hike. #-15c love the snow.
Nice one Ian, enjoy!
Have you got someone in mind to do the job John? - my fronts could do with a touch of this and I thought I'd give it a go before lobbing £2k at the problem.
Indeed Peter - my detailer is next to an independant Porsche service guy Chris Douras (company is OCD Porsche)They have a procut machine there - have a look at....
He saw mine when it was in for detailing and reckoned I could benefit but I didn’t have time to explore it yet.
Think of all those angle grinders made redundant .
Peter, he’s said his price is £170 plus vat per axle....
Blimey thats "aspirin" pricing.
I guess there's a Porsche adder in there.
Quite a few places do it, including our village (Tarvin) garage https://skimmydiscs.co.uk/your-nearest-service-centre
I hummed and hawed about getting mine done as the were rusty on the insides and it would have also forced the cleaning out of the callipers too (I hoped) but in the end I just got them all changed.
I think it's normally something like £60-£70.
If you look at the video I think even Ed China talks about £120 ish total...
Mmm - don't want them coating in gold plate. I'll get youngest child to do it - I knew they'd come in handy one day...
I’m going to use the wife, she has a very sharp tongue
I’ve sent you a PM Peter...
Thanks - replied.
