has anyone ever come across this appearing intermittently on the dash, in the screen where the mileage etc is, when starting the car? what was the cause?

it only does it once every so often, about 4 times since ive had the car. and i have a 210, pre facelift, so hopefully no sam problems! if my battery is starting to fail, could low battery voltage cause similar? i have a few batteries that i intend getting tested to see which, if any are any good in the next few weeks ready for winter!

Yes under voltage will bring up random displays of faults as the components cannot re set when the voltage is low
