Hi All,
Just thought I'd mention my dizzy cap, which I replaced last night. The car has had an occassional misfire, so I thought it would be a good idea to replace the dizzy cap and rotor arm, as the car ('98 300CE) had not had one in my 13 months and 20k of of ownership.
After some considreable faffing about to get the old one out (not much clearance between the cylnder head and the fan, but I got the technique for getting the awkward bottom bolt out in the end!) I was pretty surprised how bad the old one was. The metal contacts were very badly blackened and severely pitted - it's a wonder it ran at all! The rotor arm wasn't too bad, but certainly pretty worn.
For the sake of about £35 for both it was well worth it! Needless to say the engine is much quieter and smoother now, and throttle response is slightly improved. I'm going to be putting in about 1000 miles visiting family over Christmas, so hoping for a slight improvement in fuel consumption too (although I think my right foot needs re-tuning where that's concerned!).
Merry Christmas!
