I have a 2001 E320 cdi (W210) which had an intermittent problem causing the car to get stuck in limp home mode. One night the ABS and ESP lights came up. Next morning the car wouldn’t even turn over and the gearbox was stuck in park.

To cut a long story short the local Merc garages were not much use unless I wanted to throw my wallet at them. The guys on this forum, and Television in particular, were a great help in offering possible solutions. Here’s what worked for me and some pictures of the process.

Symptoms:
  • Limp home mode
  • ABS & ESP lights on
  • Gearbox stuck in Park.
  • Low battery voltage

Cure:
  • New battery – Bosch ‘Silver Plus’ 100Ah 460/800 – Andrew Page motor factors part no 600131080 – cost £115 inc VAT.
  • Blower fan modification courtesy of Television
  • New 10A fuse – 40p
  • New brake light switch – Mercedes – cost £9.71 inc VAT

Step 1. Fit new battery (located under back seat)

Step 2. Locate ECU module in engine bay and disconnect the blower fan.

Step 3. Check 10A fuse on ECU and replace if necessary.

Step 4. Replace the brake light switch.

Total time for the whole job is about an hour including a cup of tea.

Fan mod all 210 cars

The reason for the Fan mod is that the fan control box is mounted just behind the front bumper, during rainy weather this box gets water inside and can short out. The effect is to stop the engine as the fan control unit is wired across the engine ECU.

The fan is not required, If you wanted to keep the fan, then there is no reason why it cant be wired with an inline fuse to the 12v bus bar and not the engine ECU
