I have recently bought a 1996 Petrol C180 and this is the first Merc I have ever owned/drove/sat-in etc etc and I would like to carry out the usual oil change, oil filter, air filter and plugs. Got all the bits I need and noticed the oil filter is not the screw on type I'm used to. It's a paper replacement filter. Can anyone advise where it goes and will I need a specialist tool.

I know this sounds like I shouldn't be working on this car but I have worked on cars all my life. Just never come across this type of replacement filter before.

I think yours is the same as mine. If so, it's at the top right front of engine as you look at it under the bonnet, very easy to get at. The filter is inverted and is removed using a special 'cap' socket (76 mm 14-flute cap socket) available from 'Hellfords', most motor factors and of course MB Stealerships or even E-Bay, not too expensive. Simply change the paper element after washing out the filter cup. Tighten to 25 Nm.
Cheers, Tom.
