I think i read somewhere that MB auto gearboxes 'learn' your driving style and adjust their shift pattern based on your right foot ..

so, this raises questions ...

(1) Is it true?
(2) Would my 05 W211 220 CDI with the 5sp auto box have this feature?
(3) Can i reset it so it learns my driving style afresh?

Many Thanks in advance

For sure they do - try it out with cruise control..!

Accelerlate GENTLY - click cruise control ON. Switch c/c OFF, slow down and select 'resume'. Result - nice gentle acceleration!

Accelerate like the devil is after you and repeat above. Result - hold on to the steering wheel - weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

There is a lot of talk as to what it does.

The fact is the engine ECU talks to the gearbox ECU.
If you driving fast then the gearbox remembers and changes gear quicker, as soon as you drop back to normal relaxed driving, then the gearbox returns to normal.

I found the 7sp auto box on my '06 E280 W211 ultra smooth up to the point of its first service. Afterwards changing down to a low gear was so fierce that I rang the dealer to ask what they done to ruin my gearchange.

The response was that there was a recall ECU software upgrade and that the gearbox would settle down to my driving style over the following month. This in fact is what happened although it only took a matter of a couple of motorway trips for the old smoothness to return.

These cars are too complicated by half in my opinion.

I found that too, on a long run up the A9 to Durness.
Cruise control was on in the dual carriageway sections, where it changed to single carriageway cruise was switched off as some brisk acceleration was called for when overtaking a line of lorries. Leaving a roundabout and joining the next section of dual carriageway I hit resume and the car took of like a scalded cat, took me by surprise but I'll know next time.

that is why there is some accidents in the rain on motorways,as the car trys to resume the speed you were doing and accelerates so fast it catches drivers unaware and they hit the barrier in the middle

to answer your last question (can it be re-set), yes it can, something to do with turning the ignition on, then deptessing the accelerator, for x secs
Someone will be along soon who will know exactly what order and how long for. I did see this and reset mine, but saw no visisble difference

There is no proof in that report, what is fact is that if you were driving in a sedate manner in the rain and engaged cruise, then it would do so in a gentle manner.
It is no different to belting down a dual carriageway and hitting the 30-40 limit, the car is perfectly normal with a mile, thats how short the memory is

I'll agree with that. Using tiptronic to change down prior to overtaking, will alter any previous gearbox/cruise settings if you then hit resume on the cruise.
