I am currently in the market for an E320 CDi or C43 and wondered if Mercedes will supply a warranty if the cars don't have one? BMW simply refuse once their extended warranty elapses.

If they don't, any suggestions?

regards,
Matt

According to numerous postings i have seen relating to this issue, the "Warranty" supplied with new cars is, often not much use, as liability is rarely conceeded and you are stuck between unhelpful stealerships and DCUK, neither of whom are forthcoming in coughing up.
I am assumng you are after a pre-owned one that has its manufacturers "warranty" expired. There are on-line companies that will sell you a warranty as it is basically a form of insurance which may provide what you need.
Good luck

If its any consolation I have to say after 97k and 5 years that the Mercedes warranty is CRAP. It would have been cheaper, much much less hasslesome and probably more satisfactory to have bought a new car without any warranty and been left free to deal with issues by sorting them out myself with a competent and honest dealer rather than MB. I had to get legal with them to get anything.

My advice? Buy the car and buy one of the on line warranties that gives you breakdown/towing cover. Watch the small print for what they cover, particularly the service interval stipulations. I know of one comany that lost a van engine through a malfunction 3k after the service was due......cover refused [quite reasonably in my view].

The last laugh? My business partner decided against a new Mercedes this time. Why? He looked at my file......so he is ordering a Lexus....He described the Lexus as what Mercedes used to be like, powerful, solid, reliable and more.

If you want a run down on the E320CDI have a look. Its a great car to drive but has plenty of known expensive problems.....

Injectors are expensive and don't last. Expect a big bill after 70k...about ?500 a time. If the engine is running in the slightest way uneven its expensive, either injectors or MAF.
Glow plugs, expect failure by 60k, I think about ?300 to replace them. Don't be mean and do one, do them all. Check the glow/heater plug light goes out after starting and stays out. If it stays on then you have a faulty glow plug.
Air con...expect failure by 60k. Cost ?1,000 upwards. Make sure it cools fast and stays cool. If not get it looked at before you buy. Even a refrigerant recharge is expensive.
Brake disks, seem to go anytime after 30/40k but I still have originals and they are fine so driving style important.
Auto seems an occasional issue but usually early. I have not had any trouble.
RUST RUST RUST is a big issue on W210. Check underneath the door seals, particularly at the tops of the doors. They all go, mine were replaced in February. Bootlids on saloons are also a problem. A less visible one is rust underneath if you are buying a car where roads are heavily salted. The crossmember is vulnerable as is the cill section but its covered by plastic and hard to see.

Knocking at front, drop links, life 25-40k. Mine were done twice. Cheap, jsut do them if they knock.
Ball joints seem to have become a recent issue with some spectacular failures appearing. Mine were replaced at 90k by the garage and not charged for so there is some funny issue there.
Interior trim is poor quality. Visors have a flap over the interior mirror that switches on the light....flap breaks off so you must replace the visor, costs ?200. Seat track ends all seem to fall off too. Dont ask MB top fix them, they don't know how.
Dash computer display goes wrong and does not display, expensive to replace but no cure. Make sure it reads and displays correctly. Ther eare posts on this but I have not experienced it.
Brakes are a danger point. Have a good look at the ABS pump under the bonnet, beside the passenger side wheel arch. Any sign whatsoever of brake fluid seem to warn of a total brake and ABS faliure. I have had it twice...pedal to the floor stuff and its scary. This is despite the fact that I regularly look underneath, top up fluids etc myself. There are a lot of problems in US on this which MB are desperately trying to bury.

If you are dealing with an MB dealer and buying a used car they WILL NOT examine and fix these type of problems when you are buying. The WILL fob you off until the warranty expires. You need to get someone to check all of these things out thoroughly. A good independent is essential, there are plenty of names here and if not here buy Mercedes Enthusiast and get some. But do not rely on the MB dealer. You also need, if you are buying from MB, to get them to confirm to you in writing that the Mobilo warranty is still in place. For my part I have had a lot more hassle with the car in the earlier milage than more recently so a high mileage with a good history where thse problems have been addressed may be a better buy than a lower milage car yet to experience them. My biggest bills came between 54-75k.

Well put Olaf, all owners should unite against the Merc dealerships, and mb in UK, no one is so ripped off as us English ! Your talking to the man that got a new 30 k digger out of Caterpillar, after owning the faulty one for nearly 3 years ! Try that with a merc ! The Cat was 1 year warrenty ! Take the battle to them ! what fun !

You'll need to tell us where you are before anyone can tell you where to go. ;)
