hello people,

question....my w211 e270 cdi '03 went for an inspection at mercedes edmonton. They said it had an oil leak in the turbo unit and would cost £3000 to repair. I took it to Mercaid yesterday and the tech said it is normally for turbo units to leak oil around the seal. He said even if you install a NEW unit it would shortly leak oil as well.

I look at the car on the ramp and when the tray was taken off there was a small amount of oil deposits on tray. The pipe had oil deposits on it but he said that there is no need to replace the unit yet. Is this correct and when should i replace the unit ????

Personally, I'd just drive it until the turbo packs up!

There is no such thing as an total oil free turbo/compressor, certainly run it as is for now. At the end of the day there are rebuilders out there who specialize in re building these things at a fraction of the price from MB.

There was a "mod" to re adjust the position & tightness of the jubilee clip at the turbo seal due to oil residue seeping out. There will always be oil there but if the mod is done and everything is working correctly, it should be minimum. The actual tightening part of the jubilee clip should never be at the bottom. If it is, buy a new red seal and put the screw part at the top - dont overtighen.

Even if you decide to buy a new turbo, do not buy it from Mercedes. Buy it from a Garrett dealer who'll have the actual turbo for your car, as Mercedes bought them from Garrett. I've recently bought one for my car, it would have cost £1355 from Mercedes mail dealer but direct from Garrett it was £580!!! At that price it might be worth replacing it even if you think there is a problem. I bought mine from www.turboactive.com .

even when I had a merc warranty engine fitted (270CDI) there was still a considerable amount of oil getting into the air intake system. and this appears to be the norm. I think you will know when it becomes a problem as it can cause a lot of oil smoke from the exhaust and in extreme cases it will cause the engine to run out of control until it either blows up or runs out of oil and seizes.
