Not sure if there is a real answer on this,,car can vary so much,,some are used for towing,,some are nursed, and the arse belted off some as well,,I still think that looking at the oil on the stick gives a fair idea,as does the smell. there is little difference in your box to the 772.6 box with regards to the fluid part of the box

quite right that visual appearance and smell can tell one a lot about gbox oil, wis-net suggests this as a viable indicator of oil condition. certainly check first and if oil is translucent and has no burnt smell then do not change - whatever the mileage.

OK now I have a few more questions.
1) what is the electrical plug?
2) What is Ollies?
3) What dipstick?
4) Why do MB tell me it holds 11 lts?
5) I have also bought a filter, change it also?

1) what is the electrical plug?
this is the cable that goes to the ECU

2) What is Ollies?
Ollies is an indie on the South coast
3) What dipstick?
This is the filler tube at the rear of the engine where you teat the level and fill the box from
4) Why do MB tell me it holds 11 lts?
they only hold 7.5 liters from new so that must be a porkie
5) I have also bought a filter, change it also?
yes,,change the filer as well.
Brian

Unless you drain the converter, you will need under 4 liters

You can make a dip stick from curtain wire,,it should not smell burnt and it should be bright and clear

a careful pull will invariably remove the cap with the red tag intact. rarely see one with the tag still in but they are available from MB as jet tech says.

MB Auto Tranny Dipstick

There is a proper dipstick for the 722.6 auto box, you can buy it from any MB Parts Dept. The P/N is: W 140 589 15 21 00. Don't fudge around with silly ideas such as curtain wire just to save a few Pounds.

that is the one size fits all though isn`t it. the thinking was if there were sticks available that could be left in, there would be a demand from enthusiasts. obviously there would be one or two (or twenty!) different lengths.............

I had my first gearbox oil change done at 70,000miles (Car is an early 95- C200 with a 3 speed auto box)

Yours is a 4 speed. No C class or even 190 was a 3 speed.

Asked about dipstick, you have to order it and it is £38, but I suppose that it is worth it to be completely sure

Did the change today the oil was brownish and very thin. Glad that I decided to do this even though the bolts broke. Used MB Fluid.
