hi there!

i have a 1983 w126 500 sec with a headlamp wiper (offside) resting at the opposite end of the lamp to where it should be. both should be finishing their cycle pointing inward towards each other, but this one points away from the car! are there 2 differnt motors involved, have i got two of the same? are motors not involved at all? sorry i know next to nowt about electrics, and am just hoping there is a simple solution. my idea of a simple solution has been the to ubscrew the blade and artificially reorient it to point in - which means i cant really use the lampwash facility at all.

any suggestions, please?

The motor may be running and the blade stuck at one end.
The wiper arms normally fit on a spline, sometimes they strip the spline, back off the nut and pull the arm off, if the spline is bare or just smooth, replace the arm.

thanks for the reply but....

the motor is not running i think, because when i try the headlamp wash facility, which i think only goes on when the headlights themselves operate, the mini-wipers both work. when i,ve tried to put the wiper back in its "normal" position, it ends up washing the bumper, and probably damaging itself in the process!

thanks fent77

That shows that the nut is loose under the plastic cover that will hinge towards the blade. That will give you access to the nut. tighten it up and you will have no more problems. You have no fault with the motor.

thanks, malcolm, but there is nothing wrong with the nut, which i had already removed and put back tightly. when the washer works, it is forcing the arm down, and the arm is having to go below the headlamp, whether it likes it or not. so the motor works very well, but its turning the wiper arm the wrong way, which is why i'm so puzzled!

I am a bit lost on this, these motors are handed could it be the wrong one, does the blade go over the headlamp glass at all ? or is the problem only when it parks. If you locked the blade in the upright posistion what would happen, does it move in the opposite direction to the other one.

malcolm - thanks again, but..

if i artificially put the blade in the right position, so the headlamp wipers are arranged thus: / \ , the one on the right (driver's side) correctly wipes back & then forward, whereas the one on the left wipes down and tries to wipe the bumper rather than the headlamp glass! if i restore the wiper to the position it was when i got the car, the wipers look like this: / /, which is surely wrong, cause both wipers shouldnt travel in the same direction, but sweep towards each other. your last reply seemed to miss out a bit: were you intending to write "these motors ARE LEFT & RIGHT handed" cos if so, then I think that would be the explanation, but no one has suggested that as a possibility.

cheers- paul (fent77)

Yes these motors are handed due to the parking switch setting. on some cars they park __ __ others park as you say / \ see the link, that gives part numbers.

malcolm

Don't forget that it could be the other one that is wrong, if you want them to park in a different position, check the numbers out.
