This is a great forum with loads of information and help at hand.

Is there such a thing as a "perfect Mercedes " one that doesn't have strange faults or major expense needed on them to rectify problems that have arisen ?

Obviously not including general wear and tear and servicing.

My last car was a Honda Stream and never had a problem with it other than a dust cart going into the back and crunching it up !

Is this just a small minority of people that use this forum for problems ?

I guess there are MB owners that just hand their car to the mechanic and don't bother with this forum(or others:rolleyes:)

Does this MB exist ?

Thanks for all the help(so far)

There must be some 100 Mercedes in Lyme alone where I live, plus all those in the towns nearby, so probably a few thousand cars within a very small radius.

I am the only one on the forum from that area, so for the best part many never go wrong.

People come to forums usually when the car has gone wrong, or to seek advice before they buy a car, so in the main we are more dealing with faults more than anything else, though quite a lot never get problems.

The CPS is failing in my new acquisition after 4 weeks,, and I have been here for some time

My 124 Diesel was a trouble free car, only one that didn't need constant fettling, leccy windows was just about the only luxury.

If you look at the problems on here and most forums of other makes, the huge majority of problems are electrically or ECU based, i try to buy cars without too many extras i don't want or need, if it ain't fitted it can't fail.

I have just bought a 200 coupe and when I was looking to purchase a new Mercedes I wanted one with as many extras as possible, never thinking about if they break down, those Germans deffo know how to make quality cars. And if anything goes wrong with them then this is deffiently the place to come for advice.

I have been driving them for 20 years (¼ million miles) and can't say I have ever had a major problem (hope that hasn't tempted fate) All the usual serviceable parts brakes, exhaust, tyres have always cost far too much.

Apart from the 190E they have all had broken front springs!
The 190E had a corrosion problem with the alloys and we had to fit inner tubes - 100,000 miles and that was the only thing to let that wonderful car down (ho ho) It was a true Mercedes Benz - nothing like the stuff they churn out now.

The E300TD developed rusty wheel arches, but that was fixed under warranty.

The C220 - well its never actually broken down, but it is a crap car and certainly does not deserve the MB badge.

and most of the times the problems the people have with their MBs on here are bery similar and lots of threads have the similar fixes.

You will always see the dark side of the product on forums like these or if you work with it.

My last 5 MBs over 15 years were trouble free except for inept servicing by one particular MB main dealer. They have been however either new or near new when I bought them.

It's 30 years since I raised a spanner in anger although in the distant past I have rebuilt gear boxes, done big and little ends and replaced valves.

This is why I have little to contribute to the technical discussions on here, this is why I buy MB's. In my view life is now too short to spend it under a bonnet as opposed to behind it but each to his own. When I was young I enjoyed the battle with ageing motors.

My SL has been pretty good......not free from items over and above servicing and acknowledged consumables such as tyres but the extra over in 8.75yrs. has been about £1500.......£0.47/day......a lot less than most people spend on a cup of coffee and/or a newspaper/magazine.

Ive had my SL about the same time as MIC; mine was the next one the same dealer ( Oxford) had .I agree with the main costing point but would say that my car has had more problems than I would have liked ( Replaced steering wheel., SBC pump, rust (twice),Roof problems ( twice)) but then again its the most sophisticated and complex car Ive ever had so its been a long term joy to endure and used daily

The most reliable car?....my TVR Griffith!!

I joined this forum to seek pre-purchase advise, specifically on what to look for in a used MB of the model I was interested in. The tips were invaluable and spot on, as the first (and ONLY) thing I've had to fix (so far) is the ABC ECU.

I seriously doubt it. Mine was bought brand new and it had the engine management light come on twice in the first 4 months. I was told by a dealer it was nothing and no error codes could be found.

I had it go into limp mode twice about 3 weeks ago, once putting me in serious danger and I am yet to find out what the problem is or the fault being fixed.

Mercedes is a disgrace and all that association with prestige and relaibility must be based on past glory. I am a first time user and was going to buy out my car in 6 months time but this incident has opened my eyes to a lot of things. Never again!

I will use the balloon I saved up to buy an i40 with a 5 year warranty and hope for better customer service if problems crop up or if I feel like luxury, I will get me GS250. I have heard Lexus' customer service is second to none. I hope it is so.

I think, as has already been said, that often people join a forum like this because they do have a problem. We are now on our 4th Mercedes and only had a problem with our first one, which broke down on the day we got it, hence why I joined here and have never left

But even we can snuff it at any time, and we do not know if we will wake up dead in the morning

i refuse to have 'problems'. i may describe things to others as problems but in reality my car has 'annoying quirks' 'niggling blemishes' 'brainteasers' and at worst, 'minor inconveniences':lol::lol:
