I have just had a very competitive quote from MBO Insurance for my E320CDI Estate which I accepted. However, when the documents arrived, one of the 'benefits' listed was 'Radio/Audio cover up to £500 or 10% of the market value of the vehicle whichever is lower'. Since my car has the COMAND option, which would cost more like £2000 to replace, I questioned the cover only to be told the cover was limited to £500 because this was an optional extra and not the standard fit. Needless to say I cancelled the cover and renewed my old policy with the AA who only put a limit on none manufacturer fitted radio/audio. If you have anything other than the standard fit audio in your Mercedes it would be worth checking that you are covered.

Some insurance companies, noteably the Admiral group and all its associated companies, don't cover options at all.

Write off your Merc / BMW etc with £K's of options and they'll give you a standard one back.

My car is insured with Liverpool Victoria and it's not totally clear in their documentation that COMAND would be covered - I think it refers to standard, rather than factory, fit. However they cheerfully wrote me a letter to confirm that it would be covered to its full value.

Hi Rory
The AA is very clear. It covers 'the Insured Car's manufacturer fitted audio, satellite navigationand/or communication equipment permanentely fitted in the Insured Car provided their values have been included in the market value declared to the Insurer'. What I am disappointed about is that MBO Insurance offers such limited cover, particularly since Mercedes cars have some very expensive factory options.
