The car is a 1.8 1992 190e, engine 102 910. I'm planning to do a new exhaust (standard parts) in a couple of weeks togather with a full service. Thanks.

It might have. Look under the bonnet for a small black dome shaped cap with "MOT" written on it. It's about the size of a fifty pence. If it has this, it has a cat. If it doesn't, it may mean you havn't found it yet! Have a good look. I think the "MOT" is written in green.

It was compulsory that all petrol cars registered from 1992 were fitted with a cat............i would be surprised if yours doesnt have one fitted.

Looks like a few grey areas............clarification below.......

...."On 1 January 1996 petrol engine vehicles equipped with catalytic converters and
registered after 1 August 1992 became subject to the new CAT emissions test as part of the MoT. Only Green MoT stations may carry out these tests. Those vehicles registered prior to 1 August 1992 fitted with CATs are not subject to the MoT CAT emissions test. There are some vehicles registered during 1993 and 1994 which may not be catalyst equipped".....

I believe that if the car was built with a Cat then it must have a cat under the above rules

actually it depends when in 1992 it was registered . if its an early 1992 car he can remove the cat , if its after 1st august 1992 then your stuck with it.

If there is a hole on top of the air cleaner then it is non cat as the hole is what you push an allen key in to alter the mixture. No hole and its a cat

Then the mot tester will be legally obliged to carry out an emmisions test as if the vehicle is 'cat' equiped........the only reason that i can imagine for your car not having a cat would be if it is an import.. (ie...not uk spec)

All in my opinion.

I will go along with the above
