You don't say how old the car is but I believe all Mercs have had a/c for a very long time.
Your system may need recharging with gas?

between the thumbwheels

you have some buttons. the top one of three is the heated rear screen, the middle is aircon on/off ( marked econ. If the red light is on , the aircon is off) the bottom button is recirculate cabin air.
If you don't have an econ button, then you have no aircon. I'm pretty sure the cdi came with aircon as standard in elegance and avantgarde.
Press the econ button so the light goes out, set the thumbwheels cold and turn the fan up 2 or 3 or 4. You should get cold air pretty quickly.

My car is a 2001 E320 CDI Avantegarde. I do have the EC button.

Ive checked the manual, so to have cold air, i need to set the thumbwheels to the blue position, its states in the manual that they need to e in the white position ??

Cheers again guys !!!!)

All UK spec 2001 merc have aircon as standard.
EC set with the light off and if the air temp in the car is warmer than the thumbwheel settings, you should get cold air.

The thumbwheels are thermostatic and so set for interior temp, not heater temp. Generally set it to the middle (around 20 degrees) and forget it. I almost never touched the temp in my 210. Sometimes I got hot air, other times freezing cold, whatever was needed to get the car up or down to 20.

As per jberks really, leave it in the white section unless you really need to cool the car fast then you can move it all the way down to the blue. The EC switch switches the AC off, so when the light is on the AC is off. If your not getting cold air then have someone operate the EC switch whilst the engine is running and you are looking to the right of the engine just behind the radiator. If your system is working and you have gas you will see the compressor switch on and off with the pressing of the EC switch. The outside of the compressor spins all the time with the belt the middle engages and spins up when the AC is on and you have sufficient gas.
