What does it do if you try with the door open?
With the door open, try the manual key again. Wiggle it back and forth. They can be surprisingly stiff, especially if not used for a long time. Squirt a bit of light oil in through the key hole.
Try locking and unlocking - note when unlocking you may need to repeatedly pull on the door handle at the same time.

It's been reported many times on forums, a relatively easy fix if you are half handy. IIRC it's a broken spring (could be wrong)on the lock mechanism. Several YouTubes on how to fix.

The key turns freely both ways ,but the button inside by window does not move. I did notice that once it only locked when door was open ,so it would not shut ?

This might well be my first post...

Anyhoo, by clattering do you mean the little knob on the door bouncing up and down when you lock or unlock? As @peterws1957 says it's probably the spring on the door lock actuator. It's a known issue and happened on my '03 CLK. There are repair kits and videos but I really didn't fancy taking the door to bits to fix it. It looked like quite a bit of work. On a CLK at least.

However, there is a cheat fix that might work on your Coupe. If your car has the door lock knob that is wider at the top, remove it by pulling it out of the recess then wrap some electrical tape around the bottom inch before refitting. You may have to experiment with the amount of tape. If your Coupe has the short stubby lock knob cut an inch of wooden toothpick and jam that between the recess hole and the knob itself. The extra resistance by the toothpick or tape stops the bouncing.

Did this a few months ago and it's still working just fine. Picture was when I experimented with a bit cut off one of those WD40 straws. Since replaced with a toothpick coloured in black.
