Hi

I have a 2002 E240 Avantgarde, my problem is that my drivers door mirror glass has gone "milky", its the tinted type and a replacement glass costs £180.00 plus vat.:(

My question is is there an alternative source for this glass or alternatively will a regular glass (£44.00) fit in replacement of the tinted one.

Finally is it an easy job to replace?

Thanks in advance for any help

I recently replaced mine on my W202 C43 - I presume we're talking dimming mirror here (mine had also gone misty).

I got the glass from Mercman in Southampton 023 8078 4444. Cost about £50 odd.

It is easy to replace - takes about 5 mins odd plus some minor contemplation time.

First you have to release the cover which then slides off - fold it in to see where the spring retainer is. Then look at your replacement mirror and you will work out how it is retained - another spring retainer which is quite easy to dislodge (for removal). Plug in new mirror and re-fix. All you need is a screwdriver to help with releasing the spring clips.

The only problem I had after that was getting the cover to fix back in place and stay there, but I got it right after a week or so.

Be nice to your MB dealer.....I believe you can get replacement glass from them but much less than the figures quoted, not having to buy the whole mirror unit. Mine went milky too.

I rang my local dealer and then checked with MB head office and was quoted £180.00 plus vat:-(

Hi

Mine went milky so rather than spend close on £200 for a mirror glass i have just bought two complete folding/dipping /blinking units off ebay for £215 delivered.

I have been told that the standard glass 210 810 0821 (heated only) will fit in my mirror housing in replacement for the auto tinting glass. One question I have is that I am also told that the wiring plugs on the mirror for the heater are different, am I right in assuming that the mirror only has a live and earth, so could I just not swap over the plugs?

Thanks in advance for help

Correct
There is room for a small terminal block or you could solder and sleeve.

The Halfords stick on £10 one will still work the demister bit.

Thanks Malcolm - that's the way I'm going to go.

I would have eventually "bit the bullit" and fitted the correct one, but was talking to someone who was in the same position as me a couple of years ago and fitted the expensive / correct glass and it's already started to go "milky".

I may even apply a light tint to the regular glass before fitting so to it would look like the original glass ;)

They are starting to appear on e-Bay. I bought one the other day for £39 inc p&p. Needless to say there were a few bidders I had to nurse the auction for the last 15mins.

From the sellers photo the glass looks perfect.

Its a replacement for the drivers side which is just starting to look dodgy along the bottom edge of the glass. Not ready for the bin though just yet.

I feel MB should make some kind of gesture to owners of cars with these mirrors fitted. There is a definite problem with quality and consequently a hefty discount is in order.

Go to a window tinting firm and get a offcut, it would look normal.

That's what I'm going to do - we have a local company that does all our auto-tinting ;) they have quoted me a massive £1.50 to tint the glass
