Hello and welcome :)
Which A-Class model are we talking about, the old shape or the new shape?
I have the old shape (2004) and I changed the speakers a year ago. If you have the old shape, then basically, from memory, they are 6.5" and 5" but I cannot be 100% sure. This link here shows you a blow up of the front door http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...506716.507&CT=F&cat=66A&SID=72&SGR=200&SGN=06
and this one shows you the rear doors http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...506716.507&CT=F&cat=66A&SID=73&SGR=075&SGN=05

The original Mercedes parts are form fabricated, ie. you cannot re-use them to mount new speakers as the speaker is moulded inside plastic (unless your handy with tools and sealants). Normally if you buy 3rd party speakers, you need to get A-Class specific mounts onto which the speaker sits and the whole unit then mounts in the door.

I originally bought some American speakers (cant remember name) from Ebay, but they were crap, so I just bought the upgraded Mercedes Bose units, which are easy to swap out and sound leagues better.

You do need a special tool though to remove the door panelling (or do what I did the first time and break the clips, meaning you have to buy new ones!!!)

Thanks for coming back with that. I've got a Mk1 A160 on a 51 plate.
I put some Sony speakers in my daughters Corsa last year and the local car hifi shop advised to cut out the centres of the old speakers and screw the new ones to the old speaker frames (ring) which worked very well.

It sounds like the best way to go unless I go down the dealer route and get the BOSE ones.

Further to this, I've done a bit of experimentation with my local car hifi shop. The result of which is that unless you spend at least £100 on component front door speakers you won't hear any improvement even with a set of JBLs so stick with the OEM speakers. However, the OEM rear door speakers are twin cone and fairly poor, so this was the option I vouched for in the end and put a set of JBL coaxial speakers in there. The twin cone OEMs were letting the sound quality down because they started to 'clip' long before the front speakers and as such made the overall effect very poor as soon as you turned it up.

Hope it helps :)

Just to update, the front speakers at 6.25" and the rear are 5.25". I tried Crunch Ground Pounder speakers and they were like the bog standard ones, so switched to Bose. An active subwoofer would definitely help, I bought a Blaupunkt THB200A which fitted in the boot but never got round to making the installation permanent (requires removal of the seats and carpet).
