Hi again,

I have another little niggle with the 97 CLK. When shutting the doors, you have to slam them pretty hard. It's as if the doors have dropped. Especially the passenger door! Is this a common thing or am I just unlucky? Any ideas how to adjust them or should I not go there?

Thanks again.

Lee.

Not easy to describe here. The only corect way is to remove the stricker plates and push the doors by hand, if the door is to high or low at the rear, then the hinges need to be adjusted so that you can push the door closed and it is in the correct possition. the stricker plates should not be used for this purpose.
If the doors close in the correct possition the stricker plates can be re fitted.
they should be fitted so that they do not force the door up or down, and the door must be proud at the rear edge by 1mm-1.5mm to stop wind noise, setting the door to be over closed damages all of the rubbers and locks.

The stricker plates is the piece, mine is black, yours may be silver held on with two screw to what would be B pillar, there is a U shaped loop, its the only thing on the front of the rear panel. the two screw (torx) come right out, the plate behind is captive and will not fall out, this plate is adjustable in all directions.

If I may, the correct spelling is striker! Perhaps that's what causing the confusion. It's the door catch.

OK, will take a look later. So it's easy to adjust it? Have people done it before?

Thanks again.

Follow the instuctions in Television's first post. You may not need to adjust the hinges.

Bought a 99 CLK a couple of years ago and it was the first thing I noticed about the car, the drivers door needed a good push to close fully. Checked to see if the hinges had dropped and the the general look of the door as it reached the shut position and all seemed in line.
Months later I remembered my brothers old 1972 Beetle had the same problem, he used to open the quarter light and the door closed with ease. Tried it in the CLK with the very same result, give it a go by cracking open the drivers/passengers window by an inch or so. Wont solve the problem obviously but surely should eliminate any major adjustment. There must be some kind of air pressure release on thes cars.
