Hi,
Is anyone aware of a problem with the regulators on W210 electric windows? I've had two go in the space of a month. The car is 6 years old, 50kmiles. I'm waiting now for the others to go. Is it worth just fixing them?

I'm I just unlucky?

According to Merc I've been just unlucky a few times now:
- dead air mass sensor at 2 years.
- Battery dead at 2 years.
- Brake light housing melted, no explanation.
- rust repairs x4 (4 weeks off the road)
- Suspension bush failure at 45k
- Coolant level sensor at 45k
- now 2x Electric windows.

Decided to move to independent servicing now, fed up with Merc.

Thanks!
John

Aside from the rust and MAS I'd say you've been unlucky. Rear regulators are known to give up through lack of use however, hence I wind the rear windows up and down every few weeks. Folding mirrors have a similar issue.

Thanks,
I think lack of use could be the problem. I'll watch that one.

Commiserations. I had both rear window mechanisms go within 3 months of each other at 5 years old on my W210 E300TD. Lack of use was the excuse. The cables came off the pulleys in both cases. I still don't put them up and down as often as I should. I've had the whole car resprayed (except the roof), 3 new front wings and both rear wings have needed rust cut out. The rust is coming through again on the bonnet. aaarrrrggh! Last year I had a new rear silencer. Two weeks ago I needed a complete new exhaust, including another rear silencer because the CAT had disintegrated and contaminated the rear box. This week my MAS has failed so I've had to disconnect it so that I can at least drive the thing. It still wafts along the motorway beautifully though. I don't want to change it (except for a new shape E320CDI). But that's just dreaming.

W210 300td

Ditto same problem on on 1999 W210 300TD Estate. One then the other rear regulators busted. Cost £60 notes each time for the part from MB. I was astonished to find that it was held in place by rivets.

MB come up with the worst possible explanations, little wonder Clarkson gives them a hard time. I had a E200 bought new in the mid eighties - service at Mercedes brentford was rubbish and they continue to provide the same rubbish service 20 years later.

I am now having a intermittent starting ( onece every 30 or more starts) problem with the E300. Engine turns over and does not fire. Only way is to keep turning it over continously until it slowly starts to fire up. No smoke from the exhaust when it does start. Any ideas? My garage wants me to bring for a diagnostics check

Glow plugs - all were replaced about 24 months ago.

Car has just clocked up 90k.

runs great, out runs most gofaster sports cars, big smile.

Incidentally is the engine a 300 or a 320? On the merc service computer system, the car shows up as a 320TD. I though the current version W211 is a 320TD?

I also own a Volvo 940 - J plate bought with a 100k on the clock. It has since done another 80k. Everything works, only part that needed fixing that was not a wear item was the switch on the auto gear stick. Bigger smile

W210 300TD = 2996 cc (same for turbo or non turbo) in line 6
W210 E320CDI = 3226 cc in line 6
W211 E320CDI = 3226 cc in line 6 up to around 2006 then;
W211 E280CDI / E320CDI = 2987 cc V6

So which CDI engine is the best?
I've always heard that the 3.2 straight 6 is a fantastic engine, but what's the word on the street regarding the latest 3 litre V6?
And what about the others? 220CDI and 270CDI?
Are they as bulletproof as the 3.2?

IMHO the 3226cc IL6 is the best, the new 2987cc V6 is still too new to know what it's like long term.
The 220 is economical although not blessed with a great deal of power. The 270 sits in the middle, alhough it isn't that smooth.
I've covered 100K miles in just over 3.5yrs in mine and still love it. Would I buy another YES, although I haven't finished with this one yet.
