drive belt/tensioner

good morning! fittted new water pump and drive belt to my '87 230te last week and although the 'stuck pig' squeal is better than it was ,from about 2500 it's getting on my tit's. belt or tensioner the problem ?

Nope! it's running true. The noise originally was on tickover and was 'cured' with a good squirt of belt dressing, it then got better until it now does it on starting and then clears, but comes back at about 21/2, maybe a bit less. The noise seems to oscillate[good word that!] but doesn't sound like a bearing noise to me i.e too high pitched but there is a definite grumble I think.at tickover using a screwdriver it sounds okay. not getting that close at 21/2!!!

have you checked the bearing in the tensioner wheel? mine had gone and it made an awful noise, it also might be the alternator pwr steer etc.
I'd whip the belt off and check the bearings.
as long as the tensioner 'works' and isn't stuck then it should be ok.
belt not greasy etc?
does it get worse when you put the lights and wipers on ???
