I have a C200 Elegance on a N plate. The middle hinge is making a loud clunking noise. The hinge is the one that as a bar that goes into the door. The door became jarred a cpl of weeks ago & after a bit of playing around it finally shut but the bar now does not run smooth. Any ideas of prognosis & remedy's please.

In the first place get some PTFE spray and give it a good dose and try the door a few times, it should not be anything else, try and get it in the door

Do you mean the door stay rather than the hinge?

When you say that the door was jarred what do you mean?

The door stays can jam when the are bone dry or a little rusty, they do free up OK with a spray

The end of the stay inside the door is anchored by one bolt, this bolt may only need re-adjustment.

Hello to everyone on this thread. I am a new member with the exact same problem with my C180 1998 R reg Classic. The door is making the same noise although I am not experiencing any problems with the window. I have made an attempt to remove the card but feel reluctant due to the airbag so would love some guidance on the correct removal of the card. Any help would be greatly appreciated. many thanks. jayramdas@msn.com

Hi Jay
Its the check strap, once you have the door card off, remove the 2 outer studs from the strap/hinge, and the stud behind the card, if it isn't already fell out. Flip the rubber cover off the other end of the strap, unscrew the the stud & take all the unit out through the bottom of the door. do this as soon as poss as it could upset yr window channel. Have a look at a site www.dronsfield.com got quoted £15 with p&p, of look on www.eurocarparts.com. Good luck.

Just a quick 2 penneth ---these steel door stays are common on all MB,s --check your local car breaker or scrapyard 1st--£5 --to £10 at most. ?
(and when replacing put loctite on the bolt threads so they do not shift again when adjusted!)
