1990 500SL. My driver's side window has just begun to wind up excruciatingly slowly, then stop short about 2/3 of the way up. Winds down, but slowly also. This problem has just started to show up.

Does this generally indicate a fault with the window regulator or the window motor? Is there any way of determining if it's one or the other before I trot off to the dealer?

Thanks

Only by working out if the glass is too tight in the channels Barrie, does it go up or down with some assistance

Malcolm:

Not sure if that was a question. But, yes, it will go up beyond the "stopping" area with assistance from me.

Electric motors on the way out ...

I would respectfully suggest, Telly, that motors do sort or peter out - my wiper motor got slower and hotter on the journey home from Germany over the central plateau here in France during a blizzard.

I have a similar, reluctant and slow window motor on the front door of the 300ce - similar to the SL, there's no frame and I feel the resistence to the glass's movement is greater than a "framed" window you find in the saloon.

I would recommend getting a new motor and ensuring that the assemblies are well cleaned and lubricated during installation. Try some silicon lubricant of the glass guide rails.

Good luck.

Get a tin of silicone lubricant spray, and spray the channels on the doorframe. If that doesn't work, time to pull the door card off :)
