Having previously owned a 2000 MY E 320 CDI, I am surprised at the cramped driving position in my 2005 S. Is there any way to get the driver's seat lowered, as the lowest setting leaves my hair (what's left of it!!) touching the roof lining. In the E class I had a good 5 cm of spare headroom with the driver's seat at its lowest setting.

I want to install a PAYG mobile phone into the S Class, mostly for emergencies or to pick up a few calls when on the move. Any recommendations for a basic handset, and how do I find out the cradle part number that will fit the chosen handset and a W220 - preferably the sort of combination that is easy to pick up on e-bay second hand?

Thanks for any advice.

Do you know if your car was fitted with a phone from new.

I am only 5ft 9" and my hair kept touching the roof too,(S320) until I experimented with the seat settings. Try moving the seat back, tilt back, then down, then forward again

Hi Malcolm,

I am afraid I don't know if the car has ever had a phone fitted. Is there any way to find out apart from trying to contact the original owner (I purchased through a dealer). Why does it help if I have this information?

If it has the prewiring then you just require the relevant cradle. On recent W220's I've seen the cradle fits in the armrest. If it has the prewiring then there is a black plastic cover in the armrest where the cradle will fit. There will most likely be a small Ae on the back of the roof as well.

Hi again,

The decode of the VIN shows one option of:

354: antenna on roof centre rear for mobile D-net telephone
antenna on roof centre rear for standard D-net telephone (с 01.10.1994)

So presumably it is prewired? In the central armrest there is a widget that looks ready to take a cradle. How universal are mercedes cradles, or are they model specific? Thanks again.

They mainly take the Nokia range of phones, some Sony and Siemens

These cradles from MB cost £131 or on Ebay quite cheap.

What phone do you have.

Hi again,

I currently have a motorola RAZR, which I am not too fussed about being able to fit, and don't believe is one of the easier cradles to obtain. I will buy a phone to match any good value cradle I can source. Nokias in the 62xx range seem popular. I just want to make sure I buy a cradle that will fit my W220.

Thanks for your help.
