Very interesting - I always listed them when people wanted to know suppliers of used parts. Them and MercMan. I'll not recommend then from here on in. Sounds like a Mafia outfit!

Over the past years all car breakers have enjoyed unrivald gains in wealth from rising scrap metal prices and ripping off customers buying second hand (used ) car parts--
In the old days you went to the yard with your tool box removed what you wanted agreed a reasonable price and left with a "thankyou for using us"---Now they employ Staff--? who all have to be paid --on line and telephone orders remove the parts for you and charge the maximum they can get away with--Take it or leave it attitude and dont care if they sell the parts or not as the bodyshell has already covered the cost in scrap value-for example even used car batterys are now £300 per ton --what they do not realise is in some cases you can source brand new parts cheaper !

With modern safety laws, it is no longer possible to just go in and take things off in most yards

Dronsfields 'fine reputation' stinks on every UK Mercedes Forum . BTW customers don't get near cars to inspect purchases and I have heard they won't even bring used parts to the counter for inspection without payment first !

As above Mercman and Boss Parts seem to be reputable breakers .

There are plenty of 'traditional' breakers in most areas where you remove the parts yourself ; Mercs are not an unusual sight these days - I know dozens throughout central Scotland .

Mercedes-Benz have a used car recycling centre in Germany and sell only tested used parts which meet certain standards and which come with a warranty - there is a website which I have bookmarked on my computer at home - will post link when I return from my Christmas hols - something like M-B GTC ( gebraucht teile centre ) .

That's nonsense, bodyshells weigh very little, you might possibly get £70 or £80 for a shell, but not much more than that, factor in ELV costs and yards needing to be concrete etc and only the scrap processors have made the big money from the short period when scrap was £300 a tonne.

You can't roam around stacks of cars any more due to H&S and the fact that everyone filled up their toolbox.

A business like Dronsfields will deal with thousands of customers, so there will be more screamers than smaller breakers.

Hi Derek,
Have you used them? What are they like on price compared to the specialised breakers like Mercman?

Sureparts

I went to SureParts in Redditch recently for a wiper blade for the 129. A Valeo blade cost £12.89 inc VAT.

These guys do a postal service and were very knowledgeable - it is like Aladdin's cave in there. I did ask a local Indy first, but he said that is where he gets his and it saves him carrying stock.

The place in Germany ?

I have not tried them myself but there were a couple of guys over on the 190 forum who used them and were happy .

Have used Boss Parts a couple of times and found them very reasonable - mostly I tend to use local breakers where I take parts off myself - most of the yards round here are this type - even the ones that offer 'parts off the shelf' still let you remove parts yourself .

very suprised at this post and the comments, this is not my experience with dronsfields, apart from ian dronsfield who does not have the appropriate personality to warm customers, i spent some time arround him and he doesen't even acknowledge your presence. i would not like to work for him or he would end up with a lump on his head. i do not know how much he is able to influence some of the negative points you are posting ?

his sister angela is the opposite and knows her stuff. their father, melvin dronsfield is also helpfull, gets you a cup of tea and tells you about his fantastic merc knowledge. i have had many parts, all delivered on time etc.

when i have visited them they looked after me and sorted my problem, which was previously unsolved by other merc specialists. they have at least two very experienced ex-merc mechanics and they know the breed inside out.

you cannot stop using the railways because the train was once late for you. ! herbiemercman.

HI EVERYONE, THIS IS THE REPLY FROM ANGELA DRONSFIELD, JUST SHOWS THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY.

Hi Ian

It was Ian/Carla who actually dealt with this customer who both remember him distinctively. He has definitely told some lies in his story and he said he was a motorist journalist for the Guardian and he has friends in high places and had a big influence in the British motoring industry and was going to bad mouth us to the press.

To cut a long story short the parts were on a vehicle he wanted when he arrived ,we offered to send them to him by courier but he would have to pay for them, He had been told from Ian we had them in stock but at no time did he mention to Ian he was coming down for them, Ian took it as just as an inquiry. Obviously when he came down and got told we could not take the wishbones off he got very upset he and complained and threatened us with all sorts.

What some people don’t understand we dispatch anything from 60-100 parts a day as well as serving counter customers and not all parts can be taken off at the drop of a hat if a customer comes to the counter i.e. cars have to been broke or dismantled in a safe and proper way meaning in the correct buildings we have for obvious H&S reasons . Also we can’t take parts from vehicles if a customer rings up and says they are definitely coming for it without taking a deposit or payment for it as you can imagine how many people don’t turn up and you have wasted time getting the part off.

I’m under no illusion that I will satisfy every customer as there will be something that goes wrong and it will get somebody’s back up, but if you look on eBay and on all the other part finder systems for our customer feedback there is nothing less than 98% positive.

Kind regards

Angela Dronsfield

I may be bucking the trend here and my comments are based on my one contact.

The tele sales guy was pretty helpful and the price for the parts I needed was very competitive.
What I would say is that the care taken in packing the parts meant that they were marked by the time they got to me so I am unlikely to use the seller again.

On the other hand, there are several other people on this and other forums that do what they do because they are enthusiasts (or at least that is my perception) and I will happily support them along with my local Mercedes dealership.

Yes, and the side I'm seeing from Dronsfield is that customer care isn't exactly a priority. Good businesses fall over themselves to ensure the customer is happy, even if he hasn't gotten the deal he wanted.

Responses like this make me think one thing - "cowboys".
