not really that collectable because nobody knows much about them and very often the conversions were of "dubious taste".

What are they worth? Nothing like a similar aged AMG car which will always be easier to sell on in the future and probably about the same as a decent condition standard car.

Unless it's very cheap I'd walk away

The carat kits were offered as an alternative to AMG kits by some main dealers back in the late 80s/90s. The kits are very high quality but as mentioned above are not as desirable as an AMG. My w124 has a carat kit on and I think it looks superb very subtle but different. When purchasing a car with any carat parts on be aware that they are all non replaceable and if any thing gets damaged the only fix is a standard bumper or AMG parts in there place. So if you do buy one make sure its all in mint condition
