Answers please?

If you currently have a dvd/tv tuner that goes off while driving (as the law requires) would you want to have the choice of activating it while you are moving for passengers, of course!

If you really want to drive and watch tv yourself may I suggest you book a track day and give it a go. you will realsie its impossible but your passengers may think its a bit dumb having a dvd /tv unit in the car that they can only listen to whilst you are driving.

so would you want the choice or would you not consider it?

I do belive it is possible to remove the region 2 dvd coding as well.

this may be of interest to anyone who has bought or inadvertantly bought a dvd destined for another region area!

would that find use 2?. you could have the all regions code selected and still have the front screen dvd switch off whilst driving.

i should imagine!!

I have a dvd/tv installed - a Panasonic which is able to be switched on while driving, why else would i want to buy one.

But let me tell you this!! Music Concert DVD's...The Passengers can watch and i can still Listen!! - Look at the Picture below, a little bit of Coldplay!!

Windows all tinited so no one can see in - including the ol' Bill!! And if they do see me then i have remote control on dash that changes the mode back to sat nav - so they will never know!!

My Panasonic plays Multi Region, which i need as we import DVD's from America. The Reason we buy from America, Cheaper more Content and get released earlier!!

I agree. the thing is we dont have the choice if you buy a factory fit job.

I can be done at a price but not, it seems, at a merc dealer. I know how the law stands, same as using a mobile phone, but how come tolerant responsible individuals are not allowed to make an informed choice so the passenger can enjoy the whole effect?.

And what ****es me off is that the police car that the officers drive who nick you for having your screen on will most likely have a colour video screen in the front which is on all the time!!!!!!! :x

I have heard of this argument with the mobile phones. people who get done using them say that the police who caught them use one and they are okay. the answers given are that the police are better trained (for want of the better expression) and therefore are competant. strange then that an off duty policeman gets book thrown at him hard when caught using one off duty and is told he of all people should set the right example.

if he was in uniform he would have been held in high regard as well trained. do they have one of them belts like batman? when they take it off all the skill goes?

hmmmmm.

i maintain that using the phone without a hand held unit is dangerous as you are not in complete control of your car, but having the screen on for your passenger should be okay. the map is on and thats okay and so is your radio display for that matter. and i still dont think anyone, no matter how well trained could possibly look at tv and still drive. you would crash straight away.

or is it they dont want you distracted by it? :?:

We all like to think that we can drive a car perfectly well and ignore the screen whilst driving. We are all highly intelligent, well educated, knowledgable, succesful folk with good self control. However, we can't. Something will happen on the screen and we'll just sneak a quick glance, you then get engrossed. Remember, films are designed to catch your attention!! You know the ones that aren't - they are called flops!

I learned this lesson many years ago. I was driving on a local dual carriageway that I drove every day, no traffic, normal evening, nothing special. I glanced at my carphone (yes that long ago) to see that it had gone offline. For some reason I got into the thought process of wondering why, as I was very close to a transmitter and instead of glancing back, got mesmorised for a couple of seconds expecting it to flick back on. looking back up, I was 25 feet off the back of a parked volvo. I missed the volvo but smacked into the opposite kerb and stuffed the chassis instead. Remember, this was just a carphone, and at the time, I clocked up 50k per year without incident (save a few speeding tickets). I am sure that I am every bit as competent, observant, experienced and skilled a driver as the rest of you, but when you're relaxed and off your guard for a few seconds, your brain is not as controlled as you may like to kid yourself.

If you don't agree, then a simple question. How many times have you missed what the Mrs is saying when something more interesting (GOAL?)suddenly happens on the telly? Also, remember, its proven that women may be able to concentrate on 2 things at once - we cant!!

satnav is less of an evil, as 1) the display doesn't change that frequently and 2) you are generally somewhere you don't know, so are more alert. (most accidents occur on roads you know well). Also, the display is scientifically designed to pass all the info as quickly as possible so there is nothing to get transfixed on. Same reason your radio display or climate are'n't distracting.

It only takes a second. If you want your passengers to watch the telly, have some screens installed in the back of the headrests. Anyone that thinks a dvd screen active in the front isn't dangerous is kidding themselves.

I agree on the phone front, I have a handfree sets in my cars, but even then I have been aware that some conversations (work calls) have taken more of my attention than is wise.

When I was a cabbie, I met lots of staggering drunks who were certain they were in a perfectly fit state to drive and were ****ed off at the authorities that they couldn't. We all know they were talking bollocks .....

I agree completely with JBerks - video in the car is madness! The whole point of TV / Video / DVD is that its a visual experience, so just listening is not really going to work.
Sadly most people ( including I suspect me) greatly overestimate their abilities, where as the truth is that most people need to give 100% to the driving, no video, no phone, no "lets discuss it on the way to the meeting", just driving. Anyone who claims to be able to watch a DVD whilst driving is an accident waiting to happen.

Mark.

I agree with the driving and watching. cant be done whether safe or not.

just wondering what the passengers may think.

surely it is possible for them to have a movable screen or a screen shield that just blocks the view from the drivers eyes? OE fitted sat nav puts duplicate instructions in front of the driver. I only have stumpy legs so i wont be bothered by it but i can see that if you sit further back it will be more in your line of sight. Infact the seat travel on my car is at its furtherest forward.

I have thought about the screen in the head rests but i aint got not back seats....
