A friend of mine recently passed away and his 52 plate E class has been sitting on the drive for 3 month untouched . His widow and their son who is 22 have tried the key and nothing happens so I guess the battery on the car is flat (they have changed the key battery) the strange thing is that inserting the key blade into the boot look or the drivers door does not turn the lock manually either. is there some procedure that has to be gone through to sort this out.

Do you mean the blade won't turn?
Quite common as the locks never get used. There is no 'process', it's just stuck. WD40 and a bit of effort I'd suggest. Probably better in the door as the boot lock gets a lot of muck thrown at it.
