E-320 ( W210 1996 - Right hand drive): When started from cold, there is a noise coming from the vicinity of the glove box which sounds like a relay chattering. This noise disappears when the car has warmed up - Any suggestions as to what this could be ?

I get this on my c200 1996 same area.Would be also interested in finding out.
I would think it is coming from the relays located in the plastic box in the engine compartment on the other side of the firewal across from the glovebox.
Usually a clatter in a relay is an indication of impending doom for that relay.

I believe that on the older cars it could also be a stepper motor chattering on an air vent. Don't know if it's the same with a 210

Very strange, my W210 did this just the other day, glove box area, thought at first it was just two pieces of plastic trim squeaking together! Hasn't done it since, will keep an ear open for it!

Just noticed the relay chattering when the ignition is switched on but before the engine is started. Any ideas?

Hi

Not sure, but I think it might be chattering of the main ignition relay in the fuse/relay box, which is in the back bulkhead of the engine compartment. It is a deep fuse box, as it houses the ECU and this brings it very close to the clove compartment.

Its definitely something to do with the heating system, I noticed tonight that the noise only happens when the heater blower is switched off, sometimes I can induce the chattering by pushing and pulling at the blower switch whilst it is in the off position, the red LED on the recirculation switch flickers at the same time. Question is now, do I investigate further or just live with it!

I can hear it in my 1995 W210 E250D also...
It must be something with the air blower because once I turn on the blower and then switch it off the crank noise disappears until the next engine start of course...

The blower motors in 210s are behind the glovebox up under the dash on the far passenger side, so i imagine its probably that
