Appreciate any advice please.

When braking, even lightly and in dry weather, the ABS operates and can be felt at the footbrake pedal as a pulsing "clicking" sound, as you would get if the car was in a "skid" condition.

The car has traction control etc. and no lights show to indicate any adverse problem.

Any thoughts please?

Hi,

I think I have similar symptoms on my 2000 W210 . During light braking at slow speed I can feel that the barkes are pulsing - a bit like the effect you would have with an oval brake drum. Maybe its a warped disc but I'v just had 2 new discs on the front, and the brakes work very well at speed. Are there any experts out there who have had this ?

Regards,

Chris

Sounds like 2 different problems to me. The ABS activating is very evident due to the noise and pedal shake. I have not experienced this on a Merc but have on a Granada. It turned out to be a cable fault (trapped round the axle in my case), but didn't show a fault on the display and continued to operate. Not sure why this appeared as it did, as I would have thought the system would have detected a fault and shut off - but it didn't.

My 210 did have a warp disk feel at slow braking <5mph, but this co-incided with the idle changing from smooth and silent to a slight knock. Tracked it down to a dodgy plug lead and all smooth again - the engine was surging slightly and being an auto, this was transmitted to the wheels.

You can feel the revolution of the brake disks at very slow speeds.......Depending on mileage the disks seem to need changing at varying mileages. I have 93k on original disks, seems many have had them replaced at 40 - 50k. They can warp a little, I know on the Peugeot they were replaced due to wear and distortion and you could feel it in the pedal at slow speeds.

If the ABS is kicking in you feel a very regular pulse....and it is the case that ABS units can fail!!

Thanks for the advice - if it gets worse, I'll take a closer look at the rear discs which may be original at 84K miles. Front discs were changed at 80K

Hi
Georigg its a common sensor or rotor fault check for corrosion and a good speed signal you realy need a scope to check

C250 ABS Working at Low Speeds

Hello, I have been trawling through the brakes section looking for clues to our C250D ABS problem which is it seems the same as this, the brakes were just fine before we left the car standing for nearly a month, after this we found that the brakes were juddering, I initally thought it was just a little rust on the discs but it has not cleared and were begining to think that the vibrating is the ABS working everytime the brakes are applied, the pulseing can be felt through the pedal as well as the car genrally, there are no warning lights showing and the car pulls up nice and straight when not holding the wheel, the "bumping" from the brakes is related to speed in that it quickens with the speed of the car but I assume this would be the case with the ABS, is this right?? I feel its likly to be related to an ABS fault as I cannot see why the discs would have warped whilst just sitting for 4 weeks? but I would wellcome any ideas suggestains.
One thing I would like to do is to disable the ABS and test the brakes without any possibility of the ABS operating, Im going to look at my Haynes but I have to say that I dont think its one of the finest offerings, does anyone know if there is a safe way of doing this (ie withough frying some expensive bit of electronics that no one has ever heard of!!) is there perhaps a fuse I can pull, all replies greatly appriciated,
Steve.

I have answered your other thread, just seing one thing the ABS pulsing does not increase with the car speed, and confirms what I have said in your other thread.
