am trying to strip my driver's door mirror, and am stuck at step 3: removing the mirror glass. I've done a search and come up with some notes in an earlier thread from 996jimbo, but not enough for me I'm afraid:confused: (not a criticism of the notes btw; simply I don't have a replacement glass to look at)

my car is a 1998 e-class 210 avantgarde: my mirror is electric folding, heated, dipping

I have the removed the body-coloured casing, have taken the whole door mirror assembly off the car. Next have taken a spring-clip off the back of the mirror glass, ...and I'm stuck.

The mirror glass is connected to the adjustment motor, and the motor is attached with 3 screws to the frame, so am presuming the glass must remove leaving the motor still attached. Just can't work out how to detach the glass.

thanks if you are able to help. andrew

The glass does de-tach
there is an pin behing the glass at the top, you need a thin screw driver to move the pin and glass should come off.

at the top of the mirror you will need to crate a gap. Full tilt to the bottom

The pin is going side ways across the back top of the glass. Just move the pin up and it should release.

the wire clip along the top is hooked on like a safety pin, you press one end down and it goes back and up

Cosworth, thanks for your help but I can't find the pin you mention.

apologies for poor quality photo but this is what i am looking at - i am trying to work from the back of the mirror; first photo

my mirror glass is mounted in a black (plastic) frame; second photo.

if i find the pin what does that remove: just the mirror glass, or the mirror in its frame?

is the pin at the front i.e.glass side of the assembly, or at the back i.e. first photo?

thanks for trying to help me. andrew

PS I have removed the visible wire clip (with a circle at each end) from the top / rear of the mirror

thanks Malcolm, but that doesn't contain any more information than the link I posted - specifically it doesn't tell me how to take it apart.

Suppose it's off to the garage in the morning to ask for help

I think that someone has glued the glass on, I have had many apart and once the wire hook is of the glass lifts up and out. I have been into the work shop program for your car and it is the same as all of the others

When you say plastic cover do you mean the mirror housing if so on my E240 it does not look as if it will prise off.

It is not the self closing or auto dip but the basic electric.

On the 240 210 take off the cover and there are 2 screws top and bottom where it fixes to the door, then take out the plug

Malcolm, you are quite correct - the mirror and motor were "glued" by a double-sided sticky pad. Once I released this using a palette-knife, the mirror and the motor separated: my friendly local specialist confirmed what to do.

I needed to have the confidence that I wasn't going to break anything - replacements are very pricey

Thank you
andrew

I know that feeling only too well, one slip and it can cost a fortune, its OK after you have done it once, I suspect that at some time the glass was taken out breaking the little lugs at the bottom, and tape was used to hold it.

Thank you for posting back
