Hi all, I'm new to this forum so forgive me if I'm asking something that's been asked before.

I've just taken on a dog (a Rhodesian Ridgeback) so now have two large dogs, the new one's a bit of a handfull and can't be trusted in a Canvas roofed Land Rover, so I'm relegated to driving them about in a van at present.

After considering a few estates it's an E-class 7 seater that appeals - budget is anything between £2-£4k - I don't do large mileages so mid 90's vehicles appear to coming up - unfortunately no diesels yet though.

So it's looking like an E200/220/230 petrol.

Can anyone give me any information, pros and cons etc on 100k+ vehicles.

Many thanks

Scooby,

Where do you live?

I've got a 93 E 280 estate which you are more than welcome to come and have a nose over/chat, etc ...

Thanks for the info - I was over Bicester way at eth weekend, and Slough the week before - pity, as I live by the airport at Stansted.

I've got a couple of diesels I'm looking at, as it'll be easier to justify to the better half - I'd seen the two on Ebay, the one in Purfleet was interesting as it's local-ish.

Cheers,

BTW, your ID was quite unsettling at first as Mrs Scooby has a friend called Kinky (Kate) - jury's out whether she is or not though.

Scooby,

If you give me Kates details, I'll confirm if she lives up to her nickname.

Don't tell Mrs. Kinky though

On a serious note though - shame I missed ya last week - what with Slough only being a 15 min drive.

Good luck with your search, and tell us how ya get on. And if you're down this neck of the woods again .....

Can I take it from your name that you have a Scooby? If so, do you hang out on Scoobynet?

Keep rockin'

This was originally the reason for the Scooby thing, an old VW transporter that I painted up

I've also got one of these now, cunning called Rex not Scooby.

e class diesel estates

scooby
not sure if you are fixed up yet.

I also am near Stansted and have a 7 seater W124 diesel but unfortunately definitely not for sale. I do think they are brilliant though and would recommend to anyone. YOu will notice that fuel consumption is no where near say a VW (mine gets 33-34 overall) this is due to the fact that the car weighs about double and is thus that much safer. however compared to the petrol mercs i think its much better. millions of taxi drivers cant be wrong. If you manage to find one for under £7k you are doing well the diesel estate is the most sought after combination and therefore prices reflect that. One other good thing about the estate is that they all have self levelleing built in as standard (unlike even volvos where its an extra).

If you do get a merc and want a specialist to look after it for you i can recommend M&D motor tech at White Roding airfield, though maybe youplan to do it yourself.

Well the story so far.

Nipped down to SE London Thurs to have a look at a E300 D (M) 188k in a dealer. Scuffy, head lamp condensated, hole in rear lamp, needs two tyres, rear bumper fixing broken on driver's side, rubbish after market ariel and lacquer peeling on wing mirrors.

Next day I haggled on the phone and got them to agree to £1000 off, before I'd go down for a test drive (now £3k asking price).

Horrific journey, got there late, looked around it, wet in the boot footwell, horn and ventilation fan not working - bit ****ed off that they hadn't bothered to look it over.

Dealer said it was probably fuses, I said look at it and call me in the morning - I called him at 1.00PM and was told they were looking at it currently, and they would ring back - as of Monday afternoon they haven't.

Bit torn - got a 93 E300T D to look at in Upminster at £4k, but unsure whether to tell the SE London dealer to stick it? The engine and mechanics all appeared ok and at £3k for an M plate it's cheap, even with a few jobs to do :?:

which to choose

a couple of thoughts

on these cars condition and history is more important than age in IMHO, this is because you have galvanised bodies and fantastic mechanicals to a couple of years here and there is not so material compared to the way they have been treated, serviced , abused etc

dealers never give you a bargain so if its cheap for the year I would expect there to be a good reason for that.
