:p Hello fellow merc owners,

I need your help advise. I have just bought a E-Class 270 diesel in obisidan black 03 model. I bought it from a trader as it was an ex-company car. The problem is that I bought it at a good price as the front bumper just to the side of the headlights has a paint peel. Basically a small area of paint as completely peeled off leaving the white bodywork visible. Apparently this was caused by gradual peel through driving. Does anyone have a similiar problem OR know if this is covered by any mercedes guarantee....

thanks

regards

Nick

Hi Nick, the chances are that it started after being stressed during a parking nudge. the plastic will flex more than the paint although a flexi agent is used in the paint, I doubt if MB will fix it as they can tell what started it.
The avarage paint shop will fix it for around £100-£150 cash.

I'd agree with Sankey - it's doubtful that factory paint would peel and equally common for badly applied bodyshop paint to peel. It almost certainly has been in an accident so firstly I'd thoroughly check the car over. It may be a simple bumper respray thats gone awry in which case you've probably got yourself a good deal, or else it's had a new front end, possibly done badly.
It is possible as company cars sometimes carry costs if the driver prangs it - so some get a quick bodge job done and keep quiet. Again, if it's just the bumper then fine - but do check the rest of the panels carefully, including shut lines.

My only concern is that a trader normally doesn't give a heavy discount for an issue he can resolve cheaply. He's all about maximising profit. As TV says, to respray the bumper properly costs around £100-£150 and about 1 day in the bodyshop - nothing to a trader so he's not going to drop £800 for a £100 expense. If he's given you substantially more then either it's blarney (and you'd have got the discount anyway) or he's jobbing it out for some other reason. Tread carefully.

Either way - I suspect you'll get no joy with MB.

The car has probably been in a smash and the new paintwork has not been keyed properly

Don't assume for one minute that mercedes paint wouldn't peel!!
I have a colleauge that does mobile paint repairs, E class bumpers are a favourite for peeling bumper paint.

This is exactly what I said earlier, flexi agents are mixed into the paint, but there are limits, a minor parking nudge will flex the paint and lift it.
