I'd get it checked out when you take it for that service which is due.

check the fluid level, it shouldn't be noisy. On full lock all power steering whines a little, especially if the fluid is below par, but under normal use, no it should be quiet.
I had an E240 W210 for 5 years and it didn't have a problem, nor have I heard of it before so I question that this is a common fault. (lumpy idle is but thats another discussion)

Obvious question, but have you checked the serpentine belt and PS fluid levels/condition? Both could cause noisy steering and both may need a bit of attention at this age if they haven't already.

Maybe the power steering pulley. £14 for the part. You can do it yourself as long as you draw the belt route on a bit of paper before you take the pulley wheel off.
Mine made a "clacking - clanking" noise which sounded like a failed gear in the Power steering pump on lock. Solved by changing the pulley wheel. The noise came from the pulley wheel where the teeth had been ground out.
