I'm having trouble with my 1998 E 240 sunroof, it tilts ok, but will not slide back more than 3" max, then stops, motor is struggling though seems seized on the cables, will shut ok any ideas on my problem.
How difficult a job is it to change the cables ?

sunroof

thanks for replying so quick to my question, i've tried lubricating the cables as best i can, but as the roof only opens 3" i can't really get to the cables very well, been going back and forward till my finger was sore, also a nasty clicking noise was coming from the rear of the roof under the roof lining if i held the switch in the slide open position too long. I'll try again this weekend and let you know how i get on but any more advise would be greatly appreciated

thanks again

Sunroof problem

If you have not got this fixed yet i can tell you i had same problem
The cables get jammed up so the whole mechanism needs to come out.
The motor and cables come up from the rear boot area up the C posts i think.
I would not attempt it but i had it done by my my mechanic with the help of some drawings got from this forum and it is now fine.

no i haven't got the sunroof sorted yet, could you tell me where you found the diagram on this forum to dismantle the sunroof ?, also the motor for my sunroof is above the front interior lights, is there another motor in the rear of the car for sliding the roof ?.

many thanks

Same problem

I have, what sounds like the same problem, with my E230 '97 sunroof.

The mechanism meets with some resistance and the cable pops out of its guides when opening. They do come back into the guides when closing. Lubing may well help but I need better access. I've had the glass out but this provides limited access to the guides and cable. Is the next step removing the roof lining? This doesn't look that straightforward in itself!

Sun roof

What has happened is the clips that hold the cables in place have broken. You have to drop the headlining at the front to gain access to the clips, this is not difficult.

There are new clips for this problem as it was noted as a service item by MBUK.

Do it yourself as MB want £400 to repair it for you.

Done mine in 2 hours.(wear soft gloves so you do not mark the headlining)
