Can anyone help? recently obtained E300D Estate with a few problems. this is my first time on any forum so i hope this works.....

Engine revs freely under light acceleration when box tries to change gear below 40 mph. Box seems okay under hard acceleration from rest. any suggestions?

wiper arm gets stuck when washer function is used, if full wiper speed is selected, position 3, then all is well if water is put on later. but when the screen is clean and dry the wiper arm can sometimes get stuck again. wiper will not work on position 1 or 2 but other stalk functions are okay indicators and full beam lights. any suggestions?

Welcome - try lubricating the sliding part of the wiper arm. The gearbox could be a vacuum problem or selector valve problem I'd guess.

As stumpy says Lubricate the mechanism.
Also can you hear the wiper motor running when the wiper blade stops moving on the screen? The engine should be off otherwise its difficult to hear the motor over the noise of the engine.
Doses moving the wiper blade by hand when it stops, cause it to continue its sweep? (wiper switched on)

Hello and welcome to the forum, has the fluid ever been changed in the gearbox, its well worth doing along with a new filter, a pipe could be off the box as stumpy says

This can be caused by too much vacuum reaching the modulator valve. I think that there's no shortcut to working methodically through the vacuum system, making sure that the correct restrictors are in the lines at the right place, and the variable leak which is introduced by the valve connected to the accelerator linkage on the injector pump is working correctly.

If the entire vacuum system checks out correctly, then, it's worth getting the modulator pressure checked in the gearbox - these flaring shifts will be causing wear of the friction materials in the gearbox.

As a quick and dirty test - temporarily remove and plug the vacuum pipe connection to the modulator valve. All the shifts should be very firm (indeed!). If they are, you know the fault lies outside of the gearbox. If, however, the shifts still flare, then, sorry, but you may have a badly worn gearbox.

Re the wiper, if the blade always parks in its proper place after you have assisted it by hand and if the motor is still running when the blade becomes “stuck” then I would be betting that the nylon gear teeth have been striped, if that is the case you will require a replacement motor.£70- £80? …See post #17

However the sensible thing to do first is to clean the stalk as it is a simple operation and will rule this out as a possible fault, if the problem still persists after cleaning and inspecting the stalk, then it is likely to be the nylon gear teeth that are striped, not all of them, just the ones that correspond to where your blade gets stuck.
The only other explanation is that there is a nut loose to the rear of the mechanism, however I think that that is the most unlikely cause in your case.

The links are for a W202 but yours will be similar set up.
