It happens to tyres from new in a matter of months.
Does is have adjustable camber. Are you suggesting that the camber causes the inside tread to be compressed more than the outside, and causes cracking this way? Its the same tyre as fitted to various 911 models (265/35R18). How many degrees negative camber should the W210 have?

I have seen this before on cars with low profile tyres. All the weight seams to be on the inner wall of the tyre.Is the car lowered?? This can cause negative camber.

No, all standard. It'll never be more than 5% as standard, will it?
I'm sure that tyre manufacturers wouldn't sell a low profile tyre not fit for the purpose..Low profile tyres are fitted to performance cars with comparatively large amounts of negative camber

Yes low profile tyres are fitted to high performance cars. But they wear on the inside all the time. They never wear even.I have sean them with bulges on the inner wall of the tyre due to uneven load distribution.

CRACKING TYRES ON E CLASS 210

I BOUGHT MY E CLASS AVANTGUARD SALOON IN 1999 AS NEW, THE CAR HAS DONE JUST SHORT OF 50K
IT IS FITTED WITH AMG 9J REAR AND 8J FRONT WITH SPORTS SUSPENSION AS STANDARD EQUIP.

SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR, :( IT HAS BEEN FITTED WITH 8 SETS OF TYRES ALL CRACKED ON THE INNER WALLS (FRONT & REAR)
MERCEDES HAVE CHECKED THE CAR SUSPENSION ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND CAN FIND NO FAULTS.
I AM NO BOY RACER AND THE CAR REARLY EXCEEDS 60MPH
I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED VERYING DEGREES OF TYRE NOISE OVER THE YEARS THE LAST SET OF AVON WAS UNBEARABLE. ALTHOUGH THE REAR TYRES HAD NO NOTICABLE WEAR THEY WERE BOTH STILL CRACKED IN THE RIB AROUND THE PERIMITER.
I HAVE JUST FIT 2 NEW PIRRELLI NERO ROSSO ASS. TO THE REAR AND THE SILENCE IS BLISS, DONT KNOW HOW LONG THEY WILL LAST THOUGH.
3 MONTHS AGO I AGAIN CONTACTED MY MERCEDES GARAGE AS THE NOISE WAS AN UNRESOLVED WARRENTY ISSUE,
I SAID I THOUGHT IT COULD BE TYRE NOISE
AFTER THEY FIT 2 DIFFS, T REAR WHEEL BEARINGS, & A PROPSHAFT
OVER A PERIOD OF 6 WEEKS. THEY THEN TRIED A SET OF WHEELS & TYRES, THEY THEN AGREED BUT HAVE NEVER OFFERED ADVICE ON TYRE TYPE AT ANY TIME.
I SPOKE TO MY TYRE SUPPLIER LAST WEEK (I THINK I AM ONE OF HIS BEST CUSTOMERS) HE TELLS ME HE HAS TWO SIMULAR CUSTOMERS BOTH WITH SAME CAR AND SPEC. ONE OF THEM IS AN ESTATE BOTH WITH SAME PROBLEM.
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE WELCOME

I'd put standard merc wheels and tyres on. (probably for the same cost as a new set of tyres on yours). The noise will go away, the tyre life will go up, the ride comfort will improve, the tyres are a lot cheaper and it will handle just as well. (not an issue anyway as it sounds). The huge AMG wheels were specced by the marketing boys, not the engineers (excluding the AMG models). The car was never really designed to take them.

I've always avoided huge wheels as whilst they look good they destroy the ride, make a racket and, unless you're a real lunatic, give no handling benefit. I figure at the end of the day, whilst I still like to keep my car mint, I own a merc to drive, not to look at.

I'll not doubt get abuse from the pimpmobile owners out there now :D

TYRE WALLS CRACKING

:D After researching the problem of my tyre walls cracking on my AMG 9J & 8J wheels
It seems that the material that the tyres are made of for these big wheels bleeds oxygen through the walls thus lowering the pressures.
It is therfore advisable to check tyre pressures at least every 10 days to maintain running pressure. Or another alternative was to inflate your tyres with (I think it was Nitrogen :?: ) anyway its the same as used on aircraft and racing cars. Apparently the molecular structure of the gas is more dense and won't bleed through the tyre compound.
I have just bought myself a small compressor & tyre Inflator and I am going to try regular accurate checks over the coming months to see if this solves the problem.
Will let you know

Police forces across the country carried out roadside surveys to check tyre pressures
On average they found 75% of tyres checked had incorrect tyre pressures
Road Traffic Accident Statistics show that 86% of tyres have incorrect pressures
Tyres filled with Nitrogen will maintain their correct pressure for longer, because Nitrogen doesn't leak through the tyre's structure. Normal compressed air contains Oxygen and water vapour, both of which permeate through the tyre casing.

Better road holding
Longer tread life, up to 25% increase
Reduced fuel consumption, up to 5% reduction
No corrosion to the inside of the wheel

Hope this helps.

Tyre wear on E Class

have a 2001 E Class E320 Estate CDI Avantguard

I fitted 8" front and 9" (18" dia) rear AMG wheels from new (17" dia is standard) I thought they looked great! . After about 9000 miles I had a rear blowout at 70mph on the motorway, I only just managed to control the car. Subsequently I started to have to replace the rear tyres at 9000 mile intervals (it's obvious to me now that the blowout was due to excessive wear on the inside of each rear tyre).
After about 3 sets I took the car in for a laser alignment with no real problem reported.
As luck would have it my wife had a SL Merc with 17" rims which were the same style as the later E class, so over they were swapped :0) Now 9000 miles later guess what? They are bald!
I can only guess that the Avantguard has suspension that is lowered and produces a geometry that wears the inside rear tyres prematurely?
I now accept this and just buy the cheapest tyres
