If my memory is correct E also means you start in 2nd gear, but you can overide by using kick down

I think the E/S switch applies to the old 722.3 transmissions and such like, almost pure hydraulic control, but the E/S switch subtely changes the upshift points. These boxes always start in 2nd unless you pull the selector back to 1 (or is it 2), and then back to D whilst at a standstill.

The later boxes were more electronically controlled (and more of a nightmare if you ask me), and had a W/S switch, which I think might control which gear is used for start off, to be used in (W)inter to make it start off in a higher gear.

Of course, this could all be rubbish, but it's what I remember :)
