The 211's appear to have most of the alphabet in the ASSYST. I am guessing that the previous age related service items such as brake fluid change at 2 years is now captured in the ASSYST system. How old is the car and when was it last serviced.
I'm guessing at ~£600

1st was B, second was A. Is that normal?

Yes, on previous ASSYST systems if you go much over 13k between services then the system switches to the larger B service. You are quite lucky that your service intervals are as long as they have been quite a few members with 211's have not even had 12K between services.
you have covered 52K in just over 3 years and only had 2 services quite reasonable to me. I'm guessing that your ASSYST has picked up a few things that are age/mileage related, Brake Fluid, Pollen Filter, Possibly ATF change (I don't know if this has has been programmed into the ASSYST as yet) as well as cabin filter and wipers. I will have to talk to the service manager at my dealership to get a better understanding of the new ASSYST system.
Have you spoken with your dealership to find out what an 'E' service includes?

I don't know if this helps but a good Merc mechanic told me the letters A, B, C service and so on are to guide the workshop when booking you in as to how many hours the service is likely to take. A service is about 1 hour. B is 2 hours and so on. The E service could be 5 hours on that basis and that would be £500 for labour alone at my local dealer -if it were a new car. But for 3 years old and more they give big discounts.

Servicing is not dear. The A service is about £235, the B is about £450. The bigger ones are rare. EVEN IF your service costs £600 for the very big one after 15,000 miles that is only 4p per mile. That is the small change of motoring -even if it doesn't feel like it because you pay in a big lump.

Fuel even on a diesel like mine is 15p per mile and probably well over 20p per mile for you.

Have a look at Blobcats 100,000 mile thread. All services, brakes and all repairs cost him 4p per mile (excluding tyres).

Lastly have a look at ServicePlus (see other threads) and get a quote for your car up to its 6th birthday. You pay a set amount per month, no price increases, covers virtually everything (services, MOT's, repairs due to wear and tear -but not accidental damage). Most have been surprised how reasonable it is and how much it covers. You can't claim for the first 3 months. When you sell you can pass it on (next owner keeps up monthly payments) or you can leave by giving 3 months notice (or making 3 months payment).

Cant agree with you at all I'm afraid. I know this is an E class thread, but main dealer servicing on the C class has averaged over £1k per service. When you throw in spark plug changes, fluid changes, brakes etc. it gets very expensive, very quickly. Not to mention the cost of repairing the minor faults that always seem to be cropping up.

Most expensive car to run I have ever owned.

You've just been lucky so far that nothing more than the basic work has needed doing.

Nothing to do with luck. The service IS just the basic work. Other work like new pads, discs etc, tyres, exhausts and so on should not be confused with servicing costs. You can keep a full MBSH with all the advantages in MobiloLife, rust guarantee and resale value and, I think, safety too, by just having the service done at a Merc dealer. Other jobs can be done with an Indie if you so wish. But do look at Blobcats thread on his costs over 100,000 miles in an E320cdi. Servicing, brakes, exhausts and all repairs and maintenance came to about 4p a mile -the small change of motoring nowadays.

I have been driving Mercs since the mid eighties mainly doing 30-40k miles per year and my costs have been very similar to Blobcats.

Remember too that many of us grew up on servicing every 3000 miles, then it became every 6000 and now many diesel Mercedes do at least 15,000 miles between servicing. The cost per mile is actually quite modest and for most it is now just one service every year (or less for an average private motorist) but the bill comes in a biggish lump. The answer for many is ServicePlus which covers virtually everything (services, repairs and replacements due to wear and tear, MOT's and so on). Even on an S class, to cover mine till its 6th birthday or 120,000 miles doing 12,000 miles per year, Mercedes want £62 per month fixed for the full term with no price increases. See other threads on this.

My June 04 E320CDI has had one service at 8,000 miles (service booklet does not show which letter) and is due a D service at 17,500 miles according to the ASSYST. The car had only done 9,000 miles in over two years when I bought it - I'm wondering if it's calling up a 'big' service due to time rather than condition?

'D' is a diagnostic service, plug it in and it decides how much to lighten your wallet
